About the Book

The Philosophical Method; John McCone
Adult; Education; 284 Pages

Jun 28, 2017

The physical sciences smoothly fit together: mathematics into physics, physics into chemistry, chemistry into biochemistry, biochemistry into biology which in turn leads to psychology. The humanities, on the other hand: philosophy, ethics, political science, economics and sociology, are altogether more fragmented…

…until now…

For the first to time ever, a single philosophical work has been developed that smoothly covers the full span of: epistemology (theory of knowledge) ethics, political science and economics. In the process, the nature of ethics is clarified, human rights are placed on a objective foundation and a conception of political legitimacy is developed that both secures our crucial freedoms, is elegant and clear, while at the same time will not lead us headlong into numerous wars all over the world. This then leads to a theory of economics that is equitable, productive, has a clear and simple tax policy, will reduce homelessness and with stabilize the boom and bust cycles that our economy is currently locked in.

For those both interested in a more coherent framework of principle that spans across multiple fields and those interested in philosophy that solves practical problems this book serves as indispensable reading material that combines philosophical rigour with a relative scarcity of jargon in most places.

About the Author

John McCone, Author of The Philosophical Method

John McCone grew up in Ireland. He graduated at experimental Physics at trinity and went on to measure vortex flow and carbon impurity in fusion plasmas at CCFE in Oxfordshire. He then worked as principle spectroscopist at General Fusion, a technology company developing a magnetized target fusion reactor.
A man of many interests, John dabbled in politics and was senator of Europe United, a fellow of the prestigious Cambridge-based E3 foundation and has served on the board of Village Vancouver, a Transition Initiative aimed at building local resilient economies and self-reliant, caring communities.
Throughout his career he was concerned by the lack of direction in moral and political thought when compared with the boundless speed of scientific progress and has pondered why this was the case and how this issue could be systematically resolved. John currently writes political and moral philosophy while serving as ambassador for The Seasteading Institute.

Jenn’s Review

What do you get when you cross the empirical scientific method with philosophy, politics, and morality? According to author John McCone, you get The Philosophical Method. This was a huge step outside of my comfort zone and an unusual reading choice for me, but overall, I’m glad I took the time to read this.

Mr. McCone proposes that philosophy, morality, and even politics, can become less mudlded if the same steps required in the scientific method are applied to language. He asserts that we can improve the extent to which we communicate can be simplified, misunderstandings reduced, if we could but whittle our words into narrow boxes, such as the scientific community has done with atomic particles, quarks, and energy. Having established that, the author continues on with explaining how clarified language can further be used to simplify laws, political discourse, and morality.

Trying to read this book simply made me dizzy. The author presents a strong case for his proposition, but to be honest, I was lost in the rhetoric – philosophy is not my strength. Repeating his case over and over didn’t help me. At all. This is also a large book, and in paperback, I found it difficult to manage in paperback format, as I have medical problems that affect my hand strength and dexterity.

In my final tally, I came to this conclusion: This is likely a good, solid book on philosophy. I stepped outside my comfort zone in reading this volume, and while I came away with some thought-provoking material, I was far too muddled in getting through it to come to any valid conclusions. That said, this is probably a great read for someone who DOES enjoy philosophical discourse. It’s certainly worth a read, if you’re interested in stepping outside of your current perceptions of yourself and life.

About the Book

The Other Side of God: The Eleven Gem Odyssey of Being; Susan D. Kalior
Adult; Metaphysical; 210 Pages

Blue Wing Publications, Workshops, and Lectures (May 10, 2011)

“It is I . . . It is I . . . It is I . . . Don’t you know who I am?”

Into the void; all the answers—are there.

Journey into yourself in this surrealistic adventure into the human psyche and multi-dimensional realities in Book One of the “Other Side Trilogy”. The reader is catalyzed into a personal journey as the pages are turned, inviting a meditative experience to expand awareness, deepen self-appreciation, ease personal pain, heal psychological wounds, and bring one into a more fruitful life experience.

Packed with cutting-edge metaphysical insights and powerful psychological understandings, this story further sheds light on the human cycle, the earth, death, reincarnation, and mystical dimensions. This manuscript is a tribute to the inner sage in us all.

About the Author

Susan was born in Seattle, WA. Her first profession was a psychotherapist treating those suffering from depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, substance abuse, sexual abuse, family violence, and severe mental illness. She employed therapies such as communication skill building, relaxation training, systematic desensitization, bioenergetics, and psychodrama. She has facilitated stress management, parenting, and self-discovery workshops that have aided in the psycho-spiritual healing of many. She has lectured on metaphysical and psychological topics, and been an activist in educational matters.

Her education includes an M.A. in Ed. in Counseling/Human Relations and Behavior (NAU), a B.S. in Sociology (ASU), and ten months of psychological and metaphysical training in a Tibetan community.

With a background in college theater, psychology, and metaphysics, Susan writes in a variety of genres: psychology, philosophy, urban fantasy, and epic fantasy, infusing wisdom and hope even in her darkest plots. All her books are designed to uplift and enlighten by addressing the worst with a path to the best.

In her words:

I love to sing, meditate, and play in nature. I love fairy tales, going outside the box, and reading between the lines. I strive to see what is often missed, and to not miss what can’t be seen. There is such a life out there, and in there—beyond all perception! So I close my eyes, feel my inner rhythm, and jump off the cliff of convention. And when I land, though I might be quaking in my boots, I gather my courage and go exploring.

Through travel, study, and work, I’ve gained a rich awareness of cultural differences among people and their psycho-social struggles. I have discovered that oppression often results from the unexamined adoption of outside perceptions. The healing always has been in the individual’s stamina to expel outside perceptions of self and constructively exert one’s unique core being into the world. I am driven to facilitate expanded awareness that people may separate who they are from who they are told to be. Embracing personal power by loving our unique selves in our strengths and weaknesses . . . forever—is a key to joyous living.

My motto is: Trust your story. Live the Mystery.

Jenn’s Review

Who am I? Who are you? Who are we when we step back and dive deep into the darkness in our own minds? Take a deep breath and meet yourself in the pages of the first book in this immersive, bold, twisting tale of a woman who delves into her psyche in the midst of inner turmoil.

Susan learns she is not the sum of the masks she hides behind, and her long, arduous journey covers a lot of ground as she follows a part of herself through colorful (and a few colorless) landscapes to learn who she truly is.

This isn’t a fast read. It’s deep. It’s thought-provoking and antagonizing at times. I suppose it’s possible to read this as pure entertainment, without stopping to reflect, but in an era where we rarely stop to enjoy our experiences, I ask why anyone would?

The Other Side of God: The Eleven Gem Oddyssey of Being is a doorway to introspection and self-examination. It is the catalyst for asking yourself who you are trying to pretend to be, and who you are pretending you are not. A worthwhile read to enjoy slowly.

Jenn’s Review

I’m not a millionaire yet, but I’d sure love to be one, Dean Graziosi’s book, Millionaire Success Habits is a fantastic start. I picked this up on sale, started reading it a few days after it arrived and…

Stalled at the first exercise.

Yup. Fear won out and I wasn’t sure I could do this.

But having chronic health issues has taught me to keep trying, so I logged on to his site and downloaded the worksheets, expecting to do one chapter a day. That didn’t really work out, either.

Instead, I found myself unable to stop reading, except to do the work. It was worth it.

The habits portion doesn’t seem to really take the lead until you last few chapters, and the rest is more-or-less mindset shifts that you can make, with practice. And no, I don’t feel that the title is misleading. Mr. Graziosi lays a solid foundation for the reader’s success going forward. I just finished, and am already seeing small changes in my life, both professionals and financially.

This isn’t a stuffy, personal development book, by any means. The author wrote in the same enthusiastic, welcoming voice that you see on TV, his videos, and his podcast. Give it a go. Buy the book. Take the 30 Day challenge. Continue with the 90 Day Sprint.

Even if you have no desire to become a millionaire (this isn’t a get-rich-quick book, by the way), you probably don’t want to live a mediocre life, right? This book is your roadmap to living more fully every day of the rest of your life. It’s your guide to instilling values in your family by living in alignment with your purpose. And if you have no idea what your purpose is?

Oh, and the updated, 2.0 version? With extra chapters on productivity? Score! Cut out the timewasters and tackle what really matters.

Oh, yeah. Dean has you covered there, too. Four stars!

Excerpt (With permission of the Author)

“Wow.” The word tumbled from my lips before my body had time to register how damn good he looked.

Aiden wore his dark hair tied at the base of his neck. His sharp cheekbones were model perfect. The dimple in his cheek when wide, sculpted lips curved in a smile, sent me into a spiral of va-va-voom.

I stood there, dumbstruck.

“I thought since I’d asked you to wear a dress, I should return the favor.” He wore a crisp white shirt, unbuttoned at the collar with the sleeves rolled up on his forearms, and clean, faded jeans with a pair of black Vans. So handsome, he took my breath away.

“I never pegged you for a skater.” I stepped out of the door, my strappy sandals clicking with each footfall.

His laugh came as easy as the fingers that wrapped around my hand. “A guy can’t give away all his secrets.”

“Really? You can skateboard?” I’d never seen him do anything other than drive.

“Yeah. Vic, too.” Pleasant surprise was becoming an old friend where Aiden was concerned. He fell with ease into the rhythm of conversation. With Aiden, things that should have been awkward—weren’t.

“We didn’t always drive. Except for maybe Jordan. Old Man always let him drive around in that old truck.”

They all referred to Jordan’s grandfather as “Old Man,” even Aiden’s sisters. Jordan had restored the old Chevy truck and made it like new again.

“You loved him.” The affection for Jordan’s grandfather written plainly on Aiden’s face.

“Jordan or his grandfather?” He lifted a shoulder. “Both, I guess. Jordan is my brother, from different parents. The Old Man was just…awesome.”

“I think it’s nice.” If I searched the recesses of my mind, I could almost grasp the familial bond. Then poof, another light in my life snuffed out far too soon. Each time I was with Aiden, I trudged up things long since buried.

Yet, being with him made me happier than I could ever remember.

“Now, close your eyes.” The rumbling timbre of his voice lulled me into doing just that.

Jenn’s Review

Leslie Scott is back with another sweet and spicy romance in her latest release, Hot Lap.

Hadley’s life is falling apart in a small town. She’s spent most of her life hiding who she is, but her drunken father has a knack for outing her in the worst ways. This time, she’s lost her apartment because of his antics, and she’s tired of cleaning up after him. Her best friends know she needs a place (though they don’t know why), and they throw her on the mercy of their brother, Aiden – who also happens to be Hadley’s boss at the auto shop.

Aiden’s moved back in with his folks since his divorce left him with two small children and his little trailer is available. He’s more than happy to rent it to Hadley, dirt cheap. Having a woman he’s attracted to, so close by, is a welcome distraction for one of the biggest names in street racing, and both have wounds that seem to close the closer they get.

Platonic friendship? It’s not on either of their minds as things heat up, but for wildly different reasons. But just when things seem to be going well, forces outside the pair crop up to tear them apart.

This is a fast-paced read, filled with fast cars, hunky drivers, and strong-willed women. I couldn’t put it down for long. Well-written, and I’m already looking forward to the next installment!

Gold may not be the only treasure they find.

As they race to find the treasure, Simon and Vivian must fight the men hunting her down… and the feelings for each other growing each step of the way.

With part of a stolen treasure map in her possession and mercenaries hot on her trail, Vivien runs to the one person she knows will keep her safe. Captain Viktor. But when she arrives at his ship, it isn’t her oldest friend commanding it, a new man has taken his place. Captain Simon Blackmore. Though reluctant to work with this imposter, his skills both as a pirate and an assassin are exactly what she needs to find this treasure… and stay ahead of the men who want their map back.

Half the treasure as payment for protecting the fiery courtesan convinces Simon to escort her and help uncover Captain Avery’s lost loot. Danger nips at their heels every step of the way, and her obstinate personality makes the already monumental task even more difficult. But soon they are fighting for more than just staying alive… they are fighting the feelings for each other that are even more dangerous than the men hunting her down.

Can they work together to find the treasure that could change both their fates, or will they discover that the greatest treasure was there all along?

Jenn’s Review:

Katherine Hastings is back with a third installment of the Daggers of Desire series, rounding the series out with the story of Vivian and Simon.

Simon inherited the pirate vessel, Dark Shark, from his good friend and longtime partner, Viktor, when Viktor retired. While in port, waiting for the crew’s next adventure, a stubborn, determined woman demands to see the captain – only she’s quite distressed to discover Simon now carries the title.

Vivian’s found herself in a bad situation, the worst she’s ever faced. And when the tall, imposing Simon insists that Viktor has retired, Viv is at a loss. Her long-time friend and occasional lover, Viktor, is the only one she trusts to get her through her dilemma – a stolen half of a pirate treasure map.

Simon keeps his word and delivers Viv to Viktor’s doorstep, and true to the new Captain’s word, Viktor confirms his retirement and helps the pair plan their perilous journey to find Captain Avery’s lost pirate treasure.

Nothing in their journey is straight forward, and the pair repeatedly make their predicaments worse through their stubbornness. A common background is the only thing that eases the tension between them to quiet the constant sniping at each other.

This is a fun swashbuckling romance, with a quick pace and quick wit sprinkled throughout. While it is the third book in the series, it can easily be read on its own.

Flyte Publishing, January 23, 2019

Sometimes the safest place is in the arms of the most dangerous man.

As Viktor fights to save Nora from assassins hot on her trail, it turns out they’re up against an even bigger battle… the feelings for each other they can no longer deny.

When Viktor envisioned pulling the beautiful Baroness into his arms, he was thinking he wanted a quick roll in the hay… a one-night stand like he’d had with a lengthy list of ladies before her. Tossing her over his shoulder to escape her would-be assassins wasn’t what he had in mind, yet that’s exactly how she ended up in his arms the night they met. Now Viktor is stuck protecting the willful woman until they can solve the mystery of who would want her dead. He must use all his skills, as both pirate and assassin, to save her… and all his willpower to resist the growing feelings that threaten to pull him under.

Baroness Nora Aberdeen finds herself ripped from a life of luxury, dependent on the infuriating assassin to keep her alive. Unsure who to trust, she can’t deny the safety she feels when she’s by his side. Dragged through England to places she never imagined, Nora struggles to survive while also struggling to battle the feelings the roguish pirate awakens within her.

Can they fight their feelings while they fight for their lives? Will he be able to save her, and in doing so save himself… or will pride and duty tear them apart?

About the Author

Katherine Hastings loves love. It’s why she writes romance novels. Getting lost writing a romantic adventure is one of her favorite pastimes. When she’s not on an adventure with her characters, she can be found at her home in Wisconsin snuggling her husband, two Boston Terriers, and the world’s naughtiest cat. Two things make Katherine want to leave her happy home these days… going for rides on her dressage pony or floating at the beach in her big inflatable raft. Writing her novels while floating in the lake is one of her ultimate pleasures… that and Fried Wisconsin Cheese Curds, of course.

Jenn’s Review

Katherine Hastings is back with book 2 in the Daggers of Desire series, Beneath the Assassin’s Touch. In book 1, we briefly met the pirate, Viktor, and he’s back with his over-the-top wit and salacious, playful antics to rescue the endangered damsel, keep her out of harm’s way, and find his own happily ever after.

Viktor hides a damaged, painful past behind his mask of daring escapades, quick sense of humor, and bawdy bosom buddies. Never one to settle down for long, he agrees to take a short stint away from his pirate ship, Dark Shark, to help John and Charlie prevent an assassination. The only catch is, they don’t know exactly who’s at risk, only that the intended victim will be at a ball at a nearby estate. He’s growing weary of the pirate’s life, even if he is a captain with his own ship.

Never one to let a little work get in the way of a flirtation, Viktor trails a beautiful baroness out onto a balcony for a bit of fresh air.

Nora doesn’t exactly like the plush life she’s carved out for herself, but the cost of turning back is too high for her to pay – so she plays her part and grits her teeth. The dashing, well-dressed man that follows her around her husband’s party is more than an annoyance, his continued affections could jeopardize all those she holds dear. But when armed men attack her in the dark, she has no choice but to flee in the handsome stranger’s arms.

Nora is all prickles and defenses, continually demanding that Viktor returns her to her home, refusing to believe that she’s in any danger. Her ongoing denial and fight for her independence could cost her her life. And Viktor refuses to let the beautiful, strong Nora out of his grasp – she’s possibly his best chance at healing old wounds and finding the happiness he never thought could be his.

Ms. Hastings has tackled yet another historical romance with a flair for witty banter, sexy tensions, and action-packed adventure. BENEATH THE ASSASSIN’S TOUCH is the second book in the series, and characters and situations from book 1 are referenced, met, and take part in some of the action, but this book can be read as a standalone in its own right. A nice break from the typical adult historical romance.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • This instant classic explores how we can change our lives by changing our habits.

“With the days of pulling all-nighters and eating pizza at 2 a.m. (hopefully) behind your new grad, there’s no time like the present to get into a good routine.”—Real Simple

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY
The Wall Street Journal • Financial Times

In The Power of Habit, award-winning business reporterCharles Duhigg takes us to the thrilling edge of scientific discoveries that explain why habits exist and how they can be changed. Distilling vast amounts of information into engrossing narratives that take us from the boardrooms of Procter & Gamble to the sidelines of the NFL to the front lines of the civil rights movement, Duhigg presents a whole new understanding of human nature and its potential. At its core, The Power of Habit contains an exhilarating argument: The key to exercising regularly, losing weight, being more productive, and achieving success is understanding how habits work. As Duhigg shows, by harnessing this new science, we can transform our businesses, our communities, and our lives.

About the Author

My name is Charles Duhigg, and I’m a reporter for The New York Times. I’m also the author of The Power of Habit, about the science of habit formation, as well as Smarter Faster Better: The Secrets of Productivity in Life and Business (which is available for sale on Amazon on March 8, 2016!)

I’ve worked at the Times since 2006. In 2013, I was part of a team that won the Pulitzer Prize for a series about Apple named “The iEconomy”. Before that, I contributed to NYT series about the 2008 financial crisis, how companies take advantage of the elderly and national violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act. (For those series, I won the National Journalism Award, the Investigative Reporters and Editors’ Medal, the National Academies’ reporting award and other recognitions.)

But let’s be honest, you aren’t visiting this page so I can brag about series and awards. (Unless you’re my mom. Hi mom!)

I’m also a native of New Mexico. I studied history at Yale and received an MBA from Harvard Business School. I now live in Brooklyn with my wife and two children and, before becoming a journalist, was a bike messenger in San Francisco for one terrifying day.

I would love to hear from you. I’m at charles@charlesduhigg.com.

Jenn’s Review

Ever wonder why some habits are easier to change than others? Ever pondered what makes us tick? Why is it so hard to quit smoking or stick to a diet? Check out Charles Duhigg’s THE POWER OF HABIT.

Through engaging, real life examples drawn from personal lives and history alike, Duhigg shines a light on the psychology and neuroscience behind the things we do automatically. He explores the science behind AA, business successes and failures, and the psychology behind the Montgomery bus boycott, and why it became the catalyst for the Civil Rights movement.

Between story illustration, science, and practical tactics, the reader has a down-to-earth explanation of the habits and how to change them.

This is a priceless book for the person looking to make lasting change in their lives, and a critical insight into why some businesses fail while others succeed.

For the layperson who wants to get healthier to the seasoned boardroom professional, I would recommend this book to just about everyone. I’ve been able to use the knowledge in this book to make positive changes in my own life, and used the information to help my teenager break some of her unwanted habits early on.

This is NOT a quick fix book to help you loose weight, loose your ex, make a ton of money, etc. This IS a valuable resource for understanding habits and developing a strong game plan to make lasting change in your life.

About the Book

Good Luck with That, Kristan Higgins
Adult, Humor, 480 Pages
Berkley (August 7, 2018)

Emerson, Georgia, and Marley have been best friends ever since they met at a weight-loss camp as teens. When Emerson tragically passes away, she leaves one final wish for her best friends: to conquer the fears they still carry as adults.

For each of them, that means something different. For Marley, it’s coming to terms with the survivor’s guilt she’s carried around since her twin sister’s death, which has left her blind to the real chance for romance in her life. For Georgia, it’s about learning to stop trying to live up to her mother’s and brother’s ridiculous standards, and learning to accept the love her ex-husband has tried to give her.

But as Marley and Georgia grow stronger, the real meaning of Emerson’s dying wish becomes truly clear: more than anything, she wanted her friends to love themselves.

A novel of compassion and insight, Good Luck With That tells the story of two women who learn to embrace themselves just the way they are.

Jenn’s Review

I had the good fortune of attending a writing class taught by Kristan Higgins over the summer, and when I had the opportunity to read one of her full novels, I jumped on it. Good Luck With That is warm, witty and honest women’s fiction with a hefty dose of romance in the second half.

Emerson, Georgia, and Marley met at “fat camp” in their teens and became fast friends for life. Georgia and Marley share a house (kind of), but try to stay in touch with Emerson over the years. But the best of intentions go awry, and Georgia and Marley are called to Emerson’s hospital bedside just hours before their friend passes away. In their grief, they agree to follow the instructions in an envelope that they aren’t allowed to open until after Emerson’s funeral.

Good Luck With That is an honest and compassionate look at life with obesity and eating disorders, as well as a window into how society treats women based on their weight and size. As a woman who’s struggled with weight and eating disorders all my life, I found myself between the pages of this book. I’ve lived so many of the experiences that the protagonists endure, and their eventual triumph is heartening. The book also prompted some honest conversation at home with Hubby and Daughter (who is 13 and already struggling with society and her weight). These conversations will continue and battles will be won and lost, much like the trio in this book.

Have a hanky handy for this book, and be compassionate with yourself and others as you read. Five stars and highly recommended!

Though she failed to save her family, she pledges she will always save him, come what may. Jenn’s Review

It’s been a while since I’ve sat down with a romance I knew I could finish in an afternoon. Highland Retribution was on my TBR pile, and I figured I’d breeze through it during one of our family reading nights.

Highland Retribution is aahistorical romance set in 1280’s Scotland, and features Braden Grant and Caistine Muir – two young people with vastly different upbringings.

Braden has a quick and violent temper, but he’s been raised to do the right thing, to never hit those more vulnerable than himself, and to protect women and children. He’s recently lost his closet friend to apparent suicide, and the brief encounter with a beautiful young stranger seems to have had a powerful impact on him. Every instinct inside Braden drives him to seek her out and learn more about her situation – little does he know that learning about her will draw him and his cousins into danger and deeper into an on going mystery surrounding apparent child trafficking.

Cairstine is in a bad situation – the man who killed her entire clan has been holding her hostage for 6 years, their child is the shackles he uses to control her. When she encounters the handsome stranger at a wedding feast that she and her captor were not invited to, her heart begs the heavens to send him to help her. But first, she needs to make sure her son is safe, and her journey out of captivity is a rollercoaster of emotions and danger.

This is a quick read. Not the best romance I’ve read lately, but certainly a satisfying read. The characters don’t always have distinct voices, which was a disappointment – this is the third book in a series, and I would expect that at this point, the author would have sufficiently developed her characters and their voices. Aside from that, if you enjoy hunky Scotsmen, action, and mystery, snag this book for a quiet evening reading.

About the Book

Off the Map, Sierra Dean

Adult, Romantic Suspense, 220 Pages

Sierra Dean (October 2, 2018)

Her last job won’t be a day at the beach.

Harper Barton has one reason and one reason only to be in Colombia, and it isn’t for fun in the sun. As an expert in “acquiring” antiquities, she’s been tasked with collecting a valuable necklace from a gala. The problem? A drug kingpin wants the piece for himself, and won’t let a cat burglar get in his way.

Diego Morales is in Colombia doing research for his next book. The mild-mannered professor was expecting dusty books and boring lecture halls, not a beautiful woman sweeping him onto the dance floor and planting a kiss on him before being chased out of the building by armed guards.

Harper and Diego find themselves neck-deep in trouble when they’re kidnapped by the drug kingpin, but things go from bad to worse when they both go overboard and end up lost in the middle of the Colombian jungle. Can they stay alive long enough to get home? Can they stop fighting long enough to realize there’s more than just jungle heat simmering between them?

Off the Map is high-stakes adventure with spark, snark, and plenty of danger.

About the Author

Sierra Dean is a reformed historian. She was born and raised in the Canadian prairies and is allowed annual exit visas in order to continue her quest of steadily conquering the world one city at a time. Making the best of the cold Canadian winters, Sierra indulges in her less global interests: drinking too much tea and writing urban fantasy.

Ever since she was a young girl she has loved the idea of the supernatural coexisting with the mundane. As an adult, however, the idea evolved from the notion of fairies in flower beds, to imagining that the rugged-looking guy at the garage might secretly be a werewolf. She has used her overactive imagination to create her own version of the world, where vampire, werewolves, fairies, gods and monsters all walk among us, and she’ll continue to travel as much as possible until she finds it for real.

Jenn’s Review

Indiana Jones meets Tomb Raider in Sierra Dean’s action romantic suspense Off the Map, complete with a snarky, dare-devil heroine and anthropology professor (albeit far less daring) hero.

Harper Barton’s career as a specialty cat burgler goes sideways as the intelligence reports for a quick grab-and-go job in Columbia turns out to be utterly wrong. In an effort to get out alive, she wrangles an unassuming man into a dance at the museum gala, plants her prize in his pocket, steals a hot kiss and attempts to make a getaway.

Diego can’t believe his luck. He’s in Columbia to study some artifacts that appear to be from a lost warrior culture, and has a speech to give at the museum gala. So far, his trip has been less than exciting, and his sister back home has pestered him for years to have an adventure. When the beautiful woman who invited him to dance kisses him so passionately that he can’t wait to see her again, he thinks he might finally accomplish his sister’s challenge.

Until the beautiful woman dashes away, with armed guards on her heels.

The pair alternate between attraction and bickering over the course of the ensuing days, trying to survive their explosive escape from captivity and certain death at the hands of Columbia’s most notorious and insane drug lord. Free of his clutches, can Harper and Diego survive the jungle to make it back to safety?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Dean’s world-building and character development are spot-on. The tension, both sexual and plot, kept me reading long past bedtime, and her twists in the plot kept me guessing what misfortune might befall the couple right up to the end.

This was a satisfying story, but I felt it ended very abruptly. Ms. Dean does suggest that this may have a sequel, but with so little space between the couple’s reunion and the end… The only other down-side of my review of the book is that the editing was incomplete, but not so much as to make the book unreadable.

Off the Map is an adult read, steamy, without edging off into erotica. Action-packed, thrilling, and immersive, this one gets a thumbs up.
