Nancy E Miller lives with her husband and four rescued dogs near St. Louis, MO. She is an adamant advocate for the four-legged companions who cannot speak for themselves. Jenn’s Review
Nancy Miller is back at it with another fantastic contemporary romance. This one is for all you out there who love animals, featuring a dog rescue devoted to the low-riders in the world. A word of caution though – Ms. Miller gives a frank, critical (and truthful) look at animal abuse and puppy mills. If these things are triggers for you, be aware.
Ehren’s a confirmed, die-hard bachelor who’s finally getting tired of the constant one-night-stands and shallow, hit and miss relationships. He’s not entirely sure he wants to settle down yet, so when his mom suckers him into adopting Maggie, a miniature, long-hair dachshund with serious issues, he’s out of his depth and drawn into life with another soul to worry about.
A chance encounter with a waitress leads Ehren to Blaize, a veterinarian with a traumatic past and a big heart, who happens to specialize in the hard cases with short legs. Blaize needs to keep her distance – the mysteries and holes in her memory hold her locked in the cycle of PTSD, and relationships are a thing to avoid at all costs.
Except that Ehren and Blaize really click, bonding over more than just Maggie’s difficulties.
The Long and the Short of It All is yet another feather in Ms. Miller’s cap of deep characters and meaningful stories that go beyond sexual tension. Add in a full cast of adorable rescue dogs, and you’ve got a recipe for a winner. Four stars.
