Jenn sits down with the author of Beyond Circumstances, Gloria Joynt-Lang

Thrice Read Books participated in the original blog tour for Beyond Circumstances, by Gloria Joynt-Lang. In March 2020, Gloria re-rereleased Beyond Circumstances and we are so happy that Jenn sat down with Gloria to update our interview!

Interview March 6, 2020

Jenn: Alrighty! Let’s talk about your new contemporary romance novel, Beyond Circumstances. Is this your first novel?

Gloria: Yes, Beyond Circumstances was the first full-length novel I wrote. It was initially published in 2018. A few months after its release, the publisher went out of business. I received my rights back and took some time to decide if I wanted to republish Beyond Circumstances myself or try another publisher. While contemplating this, I queried another contemporary romance novel and I was lucky enough to sign a contract with a publisher for Braking Hard which hit the shelves a few weeks ago, (February 12, 2020). Inspired by other authors, I decided to take the plunge and self-publish Beyond Circumstances. I like the idea of doing both the traditional and self-publishing route simultaneously.  Both have their advantages.

Jenn: How long was Beyond Circumstances in the making?

Gloria: I started writing it in 2016 and I believe the storyline is even more relevant today as it was then.

Jenn: Beyond Circumstances is a romance with some serious twists and I imagine there was considerable research? Maybe “twists” isn’t the right word… You’ve tackled some big topics in the novel, and done so with exquisite finesse. How did you approach the research?

Gloria: Each time I went over it, I saw something I wanted to change. Numerous revisions are part of the creative process, but there was a point where I needed to take a break, so I started on another project before I finished Beyond Circumstances. It helped me to recharge my batteries. In regards to research, I love digging into various subject matters. For Beyond Circumstances, I listened to Opera music and absolutely fell in love with it.  Other parts of the research dealt with talking to people who went through traumatic experiences.  That was a bit more difficult, especially on an emotional level.

Jenn: As a PTSD survivor, I appreciated the honesty in Zak’s experience. I’ve read so many stereotyped “wounded warrior” romances, where love just fixed the problems. It doesn’t work that way for most of us, much as we might want it to.

Gloria: Yes, I agree. Love doesn’t cure mental health any more than it does cancer. My husband is a PTSD survivor and I can’t just hug the nightmares out of him. He’s doing better than when he was first diagnosed, but there will always be triggers. He avoids movies with a lot of violence, but sometimes graphic scenes pop up.

Jenn: Right. Managing the triggers is a chore sometimes. What inspired Zak and Lexie’s story?

Gloria: Zak and Lexie’s story was inspired by both PTSD and policies that are centered on stereotypes. One of my taglines for the novel is: Heroes walk among us all the time. We think we know who they are, but sometimes we have no idea. Unfortunately, we live in a society that judges people without even knowing them.

Jenn: Could you tell our readers a little about the book?

Gloria: Beyond Circumstances takes place within a setting of a small rural town in Illinois. The type of place where everyone knows each other and there’s a lot of shared history. It centers around Zak, a man of Middle Eastern descent, and Lexie, the town’s new doctor. Although Zak’s been residing in the community for a couple of years, he’s still an outsider in many respects. When a relationship emerges between the two, a local businesswoman along with her son, the town’s Sheriff, caution Lexie to stay away from Zak. Initially, Lexie ignores their ambiguous warnings, but when Zak vanishes for several months, she begins to reconsider how she sees him—torn between her own experiences with the man and the rumors surrounding his disappearance.

Beyond Circumstances explores bigotry, and the underlying issues of fear, grief, and isolation. It’s about healing from one’s past and the power of communities who band together to help their neighbors. It addresses Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and its impact on not only the person afflicted but those around them. I don’t mean to be vague, but I also don’t want to give away too much.

Jenn: Right! I am trying to phrase my questions so we don’t get inadvertent spoilers!

Living in a small town myself, I can vouch for the quirkiness you’ve created, but those characters have to be experienced. I can’t imagine trying to explain them (well, I can, but it was explaining them to Brian, and giving him parallel personalities that we deal with in our little town!).

Gloria: I spent my childhood in small communities and, after a couple of decades in the city, I returned to rural living. I love the friendliness of the people in small towns. I don’t think the people are any quirkier than city folk, but you get to know your neighbors better. On some level we all have idiosyncrasies. For example, I’m the opposite of Willow in Beyond Circumstances as I actually fear birds…except for Penguins.  Penguins will never swoop down on you.

Jenn: Lol. I can understand that! Did you always know you wanted to write professionally or was this more of a later-in-life decision?

Gloria: I’ve always loved writing and in a way, I did get paid for writing when I wrote reports at work. As a parole officer, you spend a lot of time assessing risk and formulating reports to justify your assessments.  When I retired, I missed the writing, so I started doing it again. But this time I wanted to write stories that ended with a happily-ever-after.

Jenn: What an awesome transition!

Gloria: It wasn’t planned, it just evolved this way.

Jenn: Sometimes, the best things happen that way.

Gloria: True.  I’m not big on planning.

Jenn: I take it then, that you are a pantser when it comes to your writing style?

Gloria: Yes, for the most part.  I do jot down ideas as they come to me and then try and organize them into a scene. But there are plenty of times where it just flows as I type. Every time I start a new novel, I vow to be more organized. Well…I guess there’s next year.

Jenn: That’s always a wonderful experience when it becomes more channeling the story than trying to “write” it.

Gloria: Yes, but I end up doing months of self-editing and revisions as I have a tendency to write too much.  For example, Beyond Circumstances started off at 120,000 words and by the time I finished I shaved off more than 20,000 words. As I learned from various editors, less is often better.

Jenn: Haha! I know how that goes.

Jenn: So, Beyond Circumstances is now available on Amazon and with Kindle Unlimited, but you mentioned that you have another one in the works. Are you far enough along with the second book (I’m guessing it’s the sequel to Beyond), that you can give us an idea of when we might be able to anticipate that one?

Gloria: Yes, the second novel in the Out of the Darkness Series is Escaping Circumstances. I’m aiming for a release later this year.  Like Beyond Circumstances, it’s a stand-alone novel.  It tells the story of Scorp, who appears in Beyond Circumstances. He’s a lot rougher around the edges than Zak, but his background is just as interesting.

Jenn: I have to admit, I’d love to get his story. Scorp reminds me of a number of soldiers I met and interacted with during Brian’s enlistment and my own time as a military-civilian.

Gloria: Yes, I’ve worked with a few Scorps myself.

Jenn: So, we have Beyond Circumstances that readers can (and should!!) grab and we won’t have a long wait until book 2 comes out. It sounds like an awesome deal to me.

As we wrap up, is there anything else you would like our readers to know?

Gloria: I’ve done the third novel for this series. This time I’m focusing on a Beta man as opposed to an Alpha man.

Jenn: Oh my! Suddenly I have ideas of who that might be about, but I’m keeping my mouth shut.

Gloria: Thanks, I appreciate that.

Jenn: You bet! On behalf of Thrice Read Books, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to talk today, and for this wonderful romance novel!

Jenn interviews contemporary romance author Gloria Joynt-Lang for the release of her newest novel, Braking Hard

A few years back, Thrice Read Books had the privilege of sitting down with debut author Gloria Joynt-Lang to talk about her first novel, Beyond Circumstances. Unfortunately, a few months after the release, the publishing house had to close its doors, and Ms. Joynt-Lang’s book was off the market. We’re very excited to welcome her back to our bookshelves with her release of Braking Hard.

Jenn: Could you tell our readers a little about your new novel, Braking Hard?

Gloria: Braking Hard is a contemporary romance novel set in a fictional coastal town in Oregon. It follows Gage O’Neill a mechanic with ADHD who happens to be the co-owner of Big C’s Automotive. When his business partner passes away, Gage’s life unravels. Navigating through his own grief leads to a series of mishaps. In an effort to stop Big C’s from tanking, Gage hires Eden Sampario, a woman who’s had her own struggles. Working in a male-dominated profession has taken a toll on her. The last thing she needs is to complicate her life by dating the boss. Braking Hard is a friends-to-lovers romance with a unique neurodiversity twist.

Jenn: How long has Braking Hard been in the making?

Gloria: I started writing Braking Hard two years ago. I had a few obstacles along the way including searching for a new publisher. I also went through a bit of health issue which derailed me from writing. I ended up with daily headaches and light sensitivity issues. For several months I couldn’t even check my emails let alone open my laptop. Blue light from electronic devices is the worst. Fortunately, it turned out to be a pinched nerve and thus treatable. Numerous trips to the chiropractor and yoga sessions helped me to realign my body. I was so thankful when the problem went away as I feared my writing days were over. I’m pretty much back to where I was before.

Jenn: I imagine there was considerable research with Braking Hard? How did you approach the research?

Gloria: I love doing research as it’s an opportunity to experience new things.  For Braking Hard I convinced my husband we needed to take a road trip to the Oregon coast. We still talk about how much fun we had. It was quite an adventure. We booked this old Airstream trailer in a farmer’s field one night. The on-line pictures seemed rather quaint. Other than the small mattress, it was kind of romantic. The only problem was that by the time we arrived down a very narrow road late at night, we were exhausted. Thankfully, our hosts had pancake mix, s’mores and a bottle of wine for us. Who would have thought red wine pairs so nicely with flapjacks? We took our two small dogs with us. A lot of places ban pets on the beach but not Oregon. I would go back in a second.

Other parts of the research dealt with talking to people with ADHD and hours reading about the disorder.  This was more difficult. Peoples’ experiences differ and there’s some contradictory information. I tried to focus on the commonalities of people with ADHD while being respectful of how different people handle the challenges. In Braking Hard there’s a scene where Gage opens up to Eden about his struggles and what works and doesn’t work for him. I believe it’s done in a respectful manner and doesn’t discount the variety of therapies and medication available to help people manage.

Jenn: What inspired Gage and Eden’s story?

Gloria: There’s a fair amount of information and dialogue on kids with ADHD, but we often forget about the adults. There’s a percentage of kids with ADHD who symptoms lessen as they get older, but for some, it’s a lifelong battle. I wanted to show not only the struggles but also a man who‘s successful. There are positive aspects of ADHD and these traits help Gage when it comes to being a mechanic and also a friend.

When it came to Eden, my goal was to create a feminine character who’s independent and tough with a degree of vulnerability. She’s in a male-dominated profession and had some horrible experiences with men. Her family situation is so different than Gage. He comes from a large family. They’re boisterous and meddlesome but love him with great intensity. With Eden there’s just her and her mom. They have a strained relationship because of her mother’s choices. Eden’s vulnerability comes from wanting to fit in both at work and in the community but also afraid of getting too close to others. People have this annoying tendency to disappoint.

Jenn: Is this your first published novel?

Gloria: No, this is the second one. My first novel was published in 2018. Unfortunately, a few months after Beyond Circumstances’ release, the publisher ended up closing shop. At the time I was devasted, but I learned a lot from that experience. The rights were returned to me, so I plan to relaunch it. I have two other novels as part of that series which I’m polishing up and hoping to get published.

Braking Hard is published through The Wild Rose Press and is the first in the Storm Harbor series. I already started on the next book and I’ve got some great ideas for the third.

Jenn: What advice would you give to aspiring authors looking to get published?

Gloria: Rejection is part of the process. It’s extremely rare for an author to be offered a contract on their first query. Most of us get turned down numerous times, especially on the first book. If you find you’re getting rejected a crazy amount of times, look at what you can do differently. Is it your story, your writing style, poor grammar? Some agents and publishers tell you what you’re doing wrong. Beta readers and critique partners also help to point you in the right direction.

Jenn: Are you are a pantser or a planner when it comes to your writing style?

Gloria: I’m more of a pantser.  I do jot a few ideas as they come to me and try to organize them into a scene, but normally I just type as it flows from my brain. Perhaps that’s why I spend a considerable amount of time doing self-edits and chopping out the excessive wordage.

Jenn: So, Braking Hard hits the shelves February 12, but you mentioned that you have more in the works for this series. Care to elaborate.

Gloria: The second novel in the Storm Harbor Series follows Gage’s cousin Cole. There are a few signs in Braking Hard that Cole is ready to settle down. Cole’s a bit of wild one so he needs a woman who will challenge him. Expect some fireworks in this enemies-to-lovers story. And there’s going to be a cat in it. I’m a dog lover so felines are foreign territory to me. I doubt I’ll be able to convince my husband we need to adopt a cat—in the name of research—so I’ll be turning to readers to educate me on all things feline.

Jenn: On behalf of Thrice Read Books, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to talk today.

Jenn’s Review

I’m already a fan of Katie Ruggle’s romance writing, and Rocky Mountain Cowboy Christmas is exactly on par for what I’ve come to expect from her contemporary romantic suspense.

Camille Brandt takes the definition of Town Eccentric to its fullest potential. She’s a loner and lonely, being around people makes her anxious. When Steve Springfield returns to town, she’s in danger of losing her heart to him, all over again, as mysterious fires start breaking out around town.

Firefighter and single dad Steve moved his children home to his family’s Christmas tree farm, hoping to find healing and safety after all they’ve lost. When he comes face-to-face with a woman he’s never been able to forget? And she’s in danger?

All bets are off.

Rocky Mountain Cowboy Christmas is a steamy little romance with adorable secondary characters (Steve’s kids are a hoot!), and unforgettable main characters. The mystery will keep you guessing right up until the reveal, with plot twists and little curveballs.

About the Book

Rigged; Vanessa North
Adult; Romance; 102 Pages

Independently published (April 30, 2018)

Kaitlyn He’s her best friend. Her business partner. The one person in her life she shouldn’t want to see naked. Until she sees him in bondage for a charity calendar photoshoot. That changes everything. Gordon He’s loved her for years. She’s the only person he trusts with his secret desires. But he doesn’t dare take their friendship to the next level until they meet Sean–who might be the missing factor in the equation. Sean He’s trusted others with his heart before, but always ends up on the outside looking in. Kaitlyn and Gordon need him in a way he can’t resist. Showing them the ropes–literally and figuratively–is temptation incarnate. He has to keep them at arms length, even if it’s the last thing he wants.

About the Author

Author of over a dozen novels, novellas, and short stories, Vanessa North delights in giving happy-ever-afters to characters who don’t think they deserve them. Relentless curiosity led her to take up knitting and run a few marathons “just to see if she could.” She started writing for the same reason. Her very patient husband pretends not to notice when her hobbies take over the house. Living and writing in Northwest Georgia, she finds her attempts to keep a quiet home are frequently thwarted by twin boy-children and a very, very large dog.

Jenn’s Review

Best friends and dares go hand in hand in Vanessa North’s sexy threesome erotic romance novella, Rigged. DISCLAIMER: This book is 100% adult, containing graphic sexual scenes and bondage.

Kaitlyn loves her business partner, Gordon. They’ve been best friends for years, but she wouldn’t dare risk that for the deeper feelings she’s sure Gordon doesn’t share. On a whim, she enters Gordon’s name in a contest for a charity calendar photoshoot, completely convinced he wouldn’t actually get picked.

Gordon adores Kaitlyn, and wouldn’t put their relationship – personal or professional – at risk by giving voice to the feelings he keeps locked away from her. Until Kaitlyn breaks the news that he’s won a page in a charity calendar. And he has to pose nude. It’s not the calendar that has him uncomfortable – it’s more the idea that he’s posing nude and in bondage. Gordon has no idea how to process his feelings as Sean, the shoot’s rigger, loops rope upon rope around Gordon’s naked body.

It’s been years since Sean’s enjoyed tying someone up this much. Gordon’s reactions to his first bondage scene trigger something in Sean, and the experienced bondage Dominant knows he’s going to have to protect his heart when Gordon and Kaitlyn invite him over to explore some more. But what’s a Dom to do when the two-some invites him to stick around?

Rigged is a quick read (less than 100 pages), erotic, fun, and sweet, all at the same time. Normally, I like my romance in a longer form, but I still found the characters well-built and engaging, with a satisfying ending. I’d love to see where this three-some could go in a longer story, but the HFN conclusion was perfectly fine for the length of this story. Two thumbs up for a run, erotic read.

About the Book

The Price; Joan Johnston

Having forfeited his marriage and custody of his children in his ambition to achieve partner status, a Houston attorney works to defend a pharmaceutical company whose drug may have killed a young girl, and when the plaintiff’s counsel turns out to be his high-school sweetheart, an unexpected romance ensues.

About the Author

Joan Johnston, the top ten New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of the Bitter Creek (THE COWBOY, THE TEXAN and THE LONER plus 18 more including the Mail-Order Bride, Captive Hearts and Sisters of the Lone Star series) and Hawk’s Way (nine in all) novels, has written more than fifty-five award-winning historical and contemporary romance novels, thirty-eight of which are connected. She received an M.A. in theater from the University of Illinois and graduated with honors from the University of Texas School of Law at Austin. Joan Johnston lives in Colorado and South Florida.

Jenn’s Review

Lawyers, Juvenile Diabetes, and second chance romance, all bundled neatly into one steamy romance novel – The Price, by Joan Johnston, a Bitter Creek novel. I loved the story, except for one glaring omission.

Luke’s given everything he can to rise to the top at a prestigious law firm on his own merit. To wit, he’s lost his marriage, has little time to give to his young daughters, his relationship with his mother (though that might be more a case of bitterness towards his step-father and a long-standing rivalry between two families. He’s nearly made it to the recommendation board for partnership, and he counts his losses as worth striving towards his dream. Until it all falls apart in a move from one department to another, and a tort case against one of the firm’s largest clients – a pharmaceutical company manufacturing a “miracle drug” for Type 1 diabetics. Kids are dying, and Luke’s expected to close the cases quietly and settled out of court. Of course, the first client he meets with won’t go quietly, and as Luke investigates the drug, and finds out his own daughter is taking it, tensions rise.

When Amy arrives for her client’s meeting at Luke’s law firm, tension cranks up even more for the two attorneys. They were high school sweethearts, and despite their opposing sides on this case, the remaining heat between them sits unresolved. Amy’s determined to win justice for her client and for other patients at risk from the killer “miracle drug.” As the pair partner up to get to the bottom of what’s really going on behind the scenes, their relationship grows and develops, threatening their careers, their lives, and the life of Luke’s older daughter, a Type 1 diabetic taking the drug.

Despite the very technical aspects of some of the storyline (including how drug trials are run, and attorney ethics), I was gravely disappointed in one serious omission: The author sets up this fictional “miracle drug” as the only alternative for T1 Diabetics to reduce needle sticks. The Hero’s ex-wife has married a doctor, and this medication doesn’t require any blood sugar testing. As the wife of a T1 Diabetic, the step-mother of a T1 Diabetic, this raised a LOT of red flags for me. First, I may not be a doctor, but I’ve been in this game long enough to question any treatment for a T1 that doesn’t include finger sticks. The girls’ stepfather is a doctor – why would he support such a thing as safe? My second REALLY big red flag was that this drug was set up as the only alternative that allowed the patients to not use injections. Insulin pumps have been around for a good thirty years or more. One injection, every two or three days, instead of five or six needles a day, and they can be used in very young pediatric patients.

The Price is an otherwise well-developed story, with deep, multi-faceted characters and twisting plots. Several subplots are threaded through the story, pushing my limit of enjoyment due to multiple POV’s, but in the end, other than the research omission above, this was still a very good read. I’d love to give this book four stars, but with the neglect in researching Type 1 Diabetes, I have to lower it to a three (a key plot point incompletely researched).

Jenn’s Review:

I found a novella that was both sweet and steamy, with a satisfying ending in Susan Sheehey’s Tell Me What You Want. Who knew being a male escort could lead a man to the woman of his dreams?

Renner’s a man with a history – and not the warm fuzzy kind of history. So when his friends dupe him into his first gig as a gigolo, he’s surprised to find that his skills as a lover can, in fact, go hand in hand with his skills as a bodyguard. He’s charming and focused, and very good at giving women what they’re looking for as a high-end escort.

Cassie just wants a full night’s sleep, which she hasn’t had since the tragedy that ripped her husband out of her life. Now, she’s juggling life without a partner and a traumatized son, nightmares and loneliness. Who knew an escort would not only help her get a good night’s sleep but would also start piecing her broken heart back together?

Tell Me What You Want is, for the most part, a sweet romance, with a few sensual scenes that follow the midpoint. Ms. Sheehey builds the suspense and character development subtly, rocketing her readers through a beautifully developed story, drops readers off a cliff in the Black Moment, and then ties it all up in a neat bow for a satisfying conclusion.

Excerpt (With permission of the Author)

“Wow.” The word tumbled from my lips before my body had time to register how damn good he looked.

Aiden wore his dark hair tied at the base of his neck. His sharp cheekbones were model perfect. The dimple in his cheek when wide, sculpted lips curved in a smile, sent me into a spiral of va-va-voom.

I stood there, dumbstruck.

“I thought since I’d asked you to wear a dress, I should return the favor.” He wore a crisp white shirt, unbuttoned at the collar with the sleeves rolled up on his forearms, and clean, faded jeans with a pair of black Vans. So handsome, he took my breath away.

“I never pegged you for a skater.” I stepped out of the door, my strappy sandals clicking with each footfall.

His laugh came as easy as the fingers that wrapped around my hand. “A guy can’t give away all his secrets.”

“Really? You can skateboard?” I’d never seen him do anything other than drive.

“Yeah. Vic, too.” Pleasant surprise was becoming an old friend where Aiden was concerned. He fell with ease into the rhythm of conversation. With Aiden, things that should have been awkward—weren’t.

“We didn’t always drive. Except for maybe Jordan. Old Man always let him drive around in that old truck.”

They all referred to Jordan’s grandfather as “Old Man,” even Aiden’s sisters. Jordan had restored the old Chevy truck and made it like new again.

“You loved him.” The affection for Jordan’s grandfather written plainly on Aiden’s face.

“Jordan or his grandfather?” He lifted a shoulder. “Both, I guess. Jordan is my brother, from different parents. The Old Man was just…awesome.”

“I think it’s nice.” If I searched the recesses of my mind, I could almost grasp the familial bond. Then poof, another light in my life snuffed out far too soon. Each time I was with Aiden, I trudged up things long since buried.

Yet, being with him made me happier than I could ever remember.

“Now, close your eyes.” The rumbling timbre of his voice lulled me into doing just that.

Jenn’s Review

Leslie Scott is back with another sweet and spicy romance in her latest release, Hot Lap.

Hadley’s life is falling apart in a small town. She’s spent most of her life hiding who she is, but her drunken father has a knack for outing her in the worst ways. This time, she’s lost her apartment because of his antics, and she’s tired of cleaning up after him. Her best friends know she needs a place (though they don’t know why), and they throw her on the mercy of their brother, Aiden – who also happens to be Hadley’s boss at the auto shop.

Aiden’s moved back in with his folks since his divorce left him with two small children and his little trailer is available. He’s more than happy to rent it to Hadley, dirt cheap. Having a woman he’s attracted to, so close by, is a welcome distraction for one of the biggest names in street racing, and both have wounds that seem to close the closer they get.

Platonic friendship? It’s not on either of their minds as things heat up, but for wildly different reasons. But just when things seem to be going well, forces outside the pair crop up to tear them apart.

This is a fast-paced read, filled with fast cars, hunky drivers, and strong-willed women. I couldn’t put it down for long. Well-written, and I’m already looking forward to the next installment!

Sometimes the safest place is in the arms of the most dangerous man.

As Viktor fights to save Nora from assassins hot on her trail, it turns out they’re up against an even bigger battle… the feelings for each other they can no longer deny.

When Viktor envisioned pulling the beautiful Baroness into his arms, he was thinking he wanted a quick roll in the hay… a one-night stand like he’d had with a lengthy list of ladies before her. Tossing her over his shoulder to escape her would-be assassins wasn’t what he had in mind, yet that’s exactly how she ended up in his arms the night they met. Now Viktor is stuck protecting the willful woman until they can solve the mystery of who would want her dead. He must use all his skills, as both pirate and assassin, to save her… and all his willpower to resist the growing feelings that threaten to pull him under.

Baroness Nora Aberdeen finds herself ripped from a life of luxury, dependent on the infuriating assassin to keep her alive. Unsure who to trust, she can’t deny the safety she feels when she’s by his side. Dragged through England to places she never imagined, Nora struggles to survive while also struggling to battle the feelings the roguish pirate awakens within her.

Can they fight their feelings while they fight for their lives? Will he be able to save her, and in doing so save himself… or will pride and duty tear them apart?

Jenn’s Review

Katherine Hastings is back with book 2 in the Daggers of Desire series, Beneath the Assassin’s Touch. In book 1, we briefly met the pirate, Viktor, and he’s back with his over-the-top wit and salacious, playful antics to rescue the endangered damsel, keep her out of harm’s way, and find his own happily ever after.

Viktor hides a damaged, painful past behind his mask of daring escapades, quick sense of humor, and bawdy bosom buddies. Never one to settle down for long, he agrees to take a short stint away from his pirate ship, Dark Shark, to help John and Charlie prevent an assassination. The only catch is, they don’t know exactly who’s at risk, only that the intended victim will be at a ball at a nearby estate. He’s growing weary of the pirate’s life, even if he is a captain with his own ship.

Never one to let a little work get in the way of a flirtation, Viktor trails a beautiful baroness out onto a balcony for a bit of fresh air.

Nora doesn’t exactly like the plush life she’s carved out for herself, but the cost of turning back is too high for her to pay – so she plays her part and grits her teeth. The dashing, well-dressed man that follows her around her husband’s party is more than an annoyance, his continued affections could jeopardize all those she holds dear. But when armed men attack her in the dark, she has no choice but to flee in the handsome stranger’s arms.

Nora is all prickles and defenses, continually demanding that Viktor returns her to her home, refusing to believe that she’s in any danger. Her ongoing denial and fight for her independence could cost her her life. And Viktor refuses to let the beautiful, strong Nora out of his grasp – she’s possibly his best chance at healing old wounds and finding the happiness he never thought could be his.

Ms. Hastings has tackled yet another historical romance with a flair for witty banter, sexy tensions, and action-packed adventure. BENEATH THE ASSASSIN’S TOUCH is the second book in the series, and characters and situations from book 1 are referenced, met, and take part in some of the action, but this book can be read as a standalone in its own right. A nice break from the typical adult historical romance.

Mini book trailer for Wishes in a Bottle by Allie McCormack

Excerpt (by Permissio)

Jenn here – I just got my copy of the final version of Wishes in a Bottle on release day. I beta read this book and Loved it. Be sure to snag your copy soon. And now, a quick excerpt from the book!

“Come on, come on.”

Robert cast a nervous glance about him, hoping that no neighbors could see through the overgrown jungle that his sister-in-law had allowed to take over the yard. If this were his, he’d rip out all these stupid plants and seed it with grass for a smooth lawn. And no swings or sandboxes to muck the place up, either. He wasn’t having any more children to take his wife’s attention and keep her from taking care of her husband, who should have been her main concern. No, a brick barbecue was what he’d have, maybe a nice hot tub.

He struggled to fit the slim piece of plastic through the narrow space between the door and its jam. Everyone went on and on about how door locks could be opened with credit cards, but it sure didn’t seem to be working. Still, he was confident it wouldn’t be much longer. Alessandra was such a fool, so trusting. She didn’t even have deadbolts on her doors. Didn’t she know that a simple knob lock could be easily opened?

“Yes!”

The tongue of the latch gave, and the plastic slid forward, holding the tongue in its groove, and the handle turned under Robert’s fingers.

From the other side of the door, he heard a low rumbling. Startled, he straightened, peering through the glass window set into the door. Staring back, almost head-even with him, was the largest, blackest Great Dane he had ever seen in his life. Its great jaws were parted, the teeth frighteningly sharp and white. The snarls emerging from those open jaws were vicious.

The dog lunged, flinging its huge body against the door separating them. Robert let go of the doorknob and pushed away so hard he fell, almost cracking his skull on the cement step. He pushed the pain aside, scrambling back from the door, praying that the slender door jam would hold as the full weight of the beast hit it again, shaking the door. Robert thanked God that he hadn’t actually opened the door and that the kitchen door opened inward, not outward.

The animal ceased his lunges at the door and was standing on his hind legs, paws on the window sill, watching Robert through the glass. Slavering, menacing snarls crescendoed to loud, ferocious barking, the dog’s eyes fixed on him with murderous intent.

Robert picked himself up from the ground and ran for his car. Who would have thought that such a frivolous, irresponsible woman would keep such a dangerous animal? Robert reached his car, almost falling into the driver’s seat in his haste to reach safety, not breathing easily until the door was safely shut. His hands were shaking and he fumbled with the keys, fingers trembling as he found the right one and fit it into the ignition. He backed out of the driveway, aimed the car down the road and headed out of there in a screech of burned rubber. If he never came to this house again in his life, it would be too soon.

Back in the house, Julian dropped onto all fours and padded into the living room. Now that the intruder had been repulsed, the danger of invasion that had brought the canine’s instincts to the fore, Julian was in complete control of the animal body he had inhabited. Stopping to sniff the books on the coffee table, and drawing in Alessandra’s scent on her sofa, her easy chair, the shawl she had left draped on one corner of the bookshelf, he found he was rather enjoying the experience. It was rather cool, in fact.

He walked about the house, experiencing the long, easy strides of the Great Dane, his toenails clicking on the polished wood floors. He paused in front of the television. The morning news that had just come on when Robert had shown up was over by now, but there would be more. He curled his massive body up on the hearth rug before the fireplace, feeling a bit awkward managing the unaccustomed long limbs, but he achieved a comfortable position finally and laid his head on his outstretched paws. His doggy self heaved a sigh and prepared to snooze, even while he kept an eye on the television. This was definitely nice.

His jaws parted and his tongue lolled out as he laughed to himself, wondering what Alessandra would think if she came home to a large, black Great Dane that evening.

Jenn’s Review:

Another awesome debut novel! Katherine Hastings’ historical romance, In the Assassin’s Arms is witty, fast-paced and engaging.

John and Charlie go back a long ways – to their childhoods, playing hide and seek and tag as they ran around John’s family estate. Their childhood friendship is shattered when Charlotte (“Charlie”) is ripped away, her father murdered in cold blood in John’s home. Charlie has always blamed John’s father, and the rival assassin organization that John and his father belong to, for her father’s death, and she’ll stop at nothing to avenge his murder.

When these two meet up again in as adults, sparks fly. They are attracted to each other while struggling with the blame each places on the other for the deaths of those they love. Despite their mutual mistrust, they must work together to solve the riddles behind a growing number of murders – before they’re both added to the list!

The banter between these two characters had me giggling – each is quick-minded and they’ve picked up right where they left off, competing with each other to see whose skills are more finely honed. Ms. Hastings serves up some piping hot sexual chemistry as well, with a face-paced plot that had me turning the page for more.

While I immensely enjoyed the dialogue and narrative, I encountered a few spots where the conversation felt a little off; some lines felt too modern, or too casual for the setting and situation. It did not, however, affect my enjoyment of the book to give it any less than 4 stars.

In the Assassin’s Arms is the first book in a series, with book 2 expected to hit the shelves later in 2018. If Adult Historical Romance is your thing, then I would highly recommend checking out Katherine Hastings’ debut.
