Everblue – Review

About the book:Everblue, Book #1 in the Mer Tales

She wanted her life to change … he wanted his to stay the same.

Seventeen-year-old Ashlyn Lanski is tired of her boring, single life. Swimming and spending time with Tatiana, her best friend, are her only sanctuary. The girls plan to leave their drab lakeside town far behind for college, and Ash hopes to finally ditch her longtime crush for Finley, Tatiana’s twin brother. But when Tatiana and her family fail to return home after a family emergency, Ashlyn does something drastic to cope with their loss.

Finley Helton and his family are good at blending in as they run their sailing charter business in Lake Tahoe. But together, they guard an ancient secret. When a not so routine meeting forces Finley, Tatiana and their mother to return to Natatoria and Fin’s father on a dangerous mission, Fin can’t stay caged up underwater for long.

Secrets lurk beneath the deep blue waters of Lake Tahoe, but a simple lifesaving kiss would change their lives forever.

About the Author:

Author Brenda Pandos lives in California with her husband and two energetic boys. After her release of EVERMORE late 2015, she suffered from a stroke. While she’s had a miraculous recovery, the part of her brain she’d used to write fiction with hasn’t returned yet.

Sam’s Review:

So, we meet again! Good, it means that you are still watching my reviews. That is very encouraging, I mean it. And now, time for the book of the week: Everblue (Mer Tales Book 1) by Brenda Pandos!

Two friends, Ashlynn (Ash) and Tatiana (Tatch, twin sister of Fin), have lived separate lives, with Tatch being homeschooled to protect her family secret (they’re mer-folk!), and Ash being regular schooled. And they both have a plan to go to the same college. Only, they are in for a big surprise. When Tatch and Fin, Ash’s crush, get called away to the mer-world, Fin finds it hard to stay away from Ash, but if he goes to her, he risks the exposure of his world. And with threats of promises, the mer equivalent to marriage, in the air for Tatch and Fin, and senior year drama for Ash, plans may just fall apart, and Fin’s and Ash’s futures will change with just a single kiss.

Everblue is a captivating story, and it will leave you wanting more. Luckily, Evergreen is the next book, so you might want to keep an eye out for the review. Please subscribe, like and enable notifications, and I’ll be back! See you next week!

Sam’s Review:

Hello everyone, my name’s Sam, and welcome to the review for Mertales book 2: Evergreen by Brenda Pandos.

Ash is still getting used to being promised. Fin is on his way to Florida for his safety, which is killing Ash. Not only is she extremely lovesick, mer-folk exist, which is something she’s never really believed in, Fin’s cousin, Colin, is attempting to promise himself to Ash in order to make her spill the beans about where Fin is, so she’s in danger, her bestie has been forced promised to the prince of Natoria, and she still has to balance out her senior year of highschool. Not fun. Not fun at all. Oh, and one more thing. Colin has the hair brained idea that Ash is the runaway princess of Natoria, Galadriel. And just because she has a royal birthmark! C’mon folks.

While Ash is having mer-stalker issues, Fin is dealing with a royal pain, literally. Princess Galadriel is at the safe-house, and is driving Fin bonkers. Even worse, she looks exactly like Ash; the only difference is what comes out of her mouth. And Fin is Galadriel’s escort. He’ll need to take a risk and return home to Ash though if he wants to keep her safe from his uncle, Alaster, and his no-good cousin Colin. And he needs to bring Galadriel. Once they are brought together, a secret is revealed that will change the way Ash will lead her life, and her plans fall apart even more.

I loved this book, loved the book after it (don’t worry, it’s coming, guys. Hang in there!), and, well, I just love the series altogether. Leave a suggestion as to a book that you think that I would like to read and review for you, subscribe, like and enable those notifications! I’ll be back with the third book, later! And now, for my unofficial goodbye. In the words of Waysa, from the Serafina series, stay bold! Bye guys!

When the King is fatally injured, Azor takes things into his own hands and he will stop at nothing to get what he wants: to be king. Including killing Tatiana’s father.

Jacob had always been loyal to the crown, that was until his brother‘s banishment to die on Bone Island without an explanation. Invited to help on a mission with Jack, leader of the underground army, Jacob learns the truth about the kingdom and of Jack’s daughter, a girl with beautiful blue eyes and a heart of gold. Falling for her—a promised princess—wasn’t supposed to happen.

Sam’s Review:

Hello to all of my viewers, and welcome back to Sam’s Teen Reads Corner, and we shall be continuing the Mer Tales series by Brenda Pandos with Everlost. Instead of having Ash as the star, Tatchi’s story is told.

Tatchi has been forced promised to the jerk prince Azor. Even though her promising tattoo and royal birthmark that was supposed to come with the promise haven’t made an appearance, she’s fallen head over tail for the prince. However, the rebel that tried to take her and got a chunk taken out of his arm is now her bodyguard.

The longer she stays at the palace, the more secrets she finds, and none of them are good, and almost all of them are against her. Azor’s father, the king is dying and tries to force promise Tatchi (again!) to himself to free her, her promise is a fake, and Azor wants her to pull off a con.

While I do enjoy the series, this wasn’t quite as enjoyable as the other two, which, and this is just my opinion, is kind of a bummer. So, yeah, for ratings, it gets four of five stars. Shocker! Alright, readers. Please remember to subscribe, like, enable notifications, and if you have one, suggest a book that you’d think that I would enjoy, and I will attempt to do a review. He patrolled in ward cars, trooped for three days through a sea of pilgrims to Elvis’s funeral, edited the Memphis Police Association’s newspaper and acted as the association’s vice-president. For twenty-six years he held positions on the TACT Squad.

Jenn’s Review:

I first saw this book on Amazon about a year ago when I started delving into learning about the Law of Attraction. I finally got around to buying it in December, and just finished it this week, as I’ve been slowly working through the exercises listed as I read.

Unlike a number of self-published, self-help books, this one doesn’t spend 50 pages convincing you that his methods work. No, instead, he dives straight into how to use the methods (the Personal Mastery Plan) and walks you, step by step, through creating a Plan for your own life.

Remember, I’m a planning freak, and this Plan soothed that part of me. Even before I had the complete Plan (all seven dimensions that Mr. Lodge goes over), I began to see changes in my attitude, my businesses and my personal life. This is not “so much bunk” as so many other planning guides tend towards, but real, honest, working methods towards achieving newer and greater heights.

Yes, unlike most similar length books, it took me almost two months to get through it – however, they’ve been life-altering, mindset-changing months that have set me on a path towards personal, vocational and financial success.

As a serial book reviewer, I’ve read countless books. Very few leave my desk with the words, “Everyone should read this book.” Even fewer leave me wondering how I can incorporate them into my daughter’s education.

This one has.

Jenn’s Review:

Book Review - Your First 100 by Meera Kothand Business and Marketing strategy http://bit.ly/TRB100Rev

I’m not new to Meera Kothand. Recently, I took an email course on newsletters from her, and was immediately hooked. So when she announced the release of Your First 100, I had to run to look at it, because in my “other” life/business, I’m working to start up a mentoring business to support the writing part of my life. (Reading supports the bookstore, mentoring supports the writing)

Your First 100 is no-nonsense and right to the point, but this isn’t one of those cheap-ey, short-form PDF books that so many online businesses bandy about. Meera dives in deep, provides resources, and give concise advice about how to build your audience from the ground up. All the way up through converting your audience to paying clients and beyond, to ensuring that those paying clients come back again and again, because of the consistent customer journey that delights them.

Admittedly, I haven’t finished the worksheets that Meera provides to help you through the process. I started to, and then got a bit lost in just enjoying what she was saying. Now that I’ve finished it, I’m going back to the beginning to work through the homework and worksheets that correspond to each section.

If you are launching any online business… If you already have an online business… Especially if your online business is struggling – you need this book.

It won’t overwhelm you with how to grow your Facebook page, or get more Twitter followers. This is a no-nonsense and down to earth approach to providing the best, authentic version of what you offer to your ideal customers.

The Stravinsky Intrigue – Review

Sam's Teen Read Corner review of The Stravinsky Intrigue by Darrin Kennedy

About this book:

Nine months have passed since psychic Mira Tejedor last walked the halls of Anthony Faircloth’s adolescent mind. All but family now, Mira is relocating to Charlotte, NC, not only for a much-needed change of scenery, but to further her burgeoning relationship with Dr. Thomas Archer. On the eve of her move, however, a new threat emerges.

Young girls from every corner of Charlotte are falling catatonic, a condition eerily similar to the illness from which Mira rescued Anthony the previous fall. Mira reluctantly agrees to help Detective Calvin Sterling with the case and soon finds herself pulled into a new pair of fantasy worlds, both borne from the brilliant mind of Igor Stravinsky.

In the world of The Firebird, Mira becomes the warrior Ivanovna and battles an immortal evil threatening to steal the girls’ souls for all eternity. In the Russian fair from Petrushka, she assumes the role of Ballerina, one of three magical puppets who dance at the whim of a cruel Charlatan. Torn between Moor and Clown, bizarre doppelgangers of the two vastly different men in her life, and threatened at every turn by a sorcerer who craves her very essence, Mira must navigate the cruel deceptions of both worlds and win, or her life and the lives of a dozen innocents will be forfeit.

Sam's Teen Reads Corner reviews Darrin Kennedy's paranormal suspense novel "The Stravinsky Intrigue"

About the author:

Darrin Kennedy - Author of the Fugue and Fable series

Darin Kennedy, born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is a graduate of Wake Forest University and Bowman Gray School of Medicine. After completing family medicine residency in the mountains of Virginia, he served eight years as a United States Army physician and wrote his first novel in 2003 in the sands of northern Iraq. His debut novel, The Mussorgsky Riddle, was born from a fusion of two of his lifelong loves: classical music and world mythology. His short stories can be found in various publications and he is currently hard at work on his next novel. Doctor by day and novelist by night, he writes and practices medicine in Charlotte, North Carolina. When not engaged in either of the above activities, he has been known to strum the guitar, enjoy a bite of sushi, and rumor has it he even sleeps on occasion.

Sam’s Review:

The Stravinsky Intrigue by Darin Kennedy is the sequel to The Mussorgsky Riddle, and it doesn’t disappoint this reader of the series. Mira is back on the case once more as she tries to find the one who the six comatose girls in the hospital. Taking more trips into the Exhibition, she discovering that instead of having all of her old friends, she’s caught in The Firebird, The Rite of Spring and Petrushka.

Once more, this book was incredible and fun to read, and there weren’t as many confusing moments in it, which is great. And just so you know, Mira won’t be the the main character in the next book. Sorry.

**Jenn’s note: This isn’t classified as middle grade or young adult. Since there isn’t much bad language or graphic violence in book 1, I let Sam tackle this series when she asked, because she is pretty good at knowing her own limits when it comes to lit.

Meditation: How To Meditate To Get Rid Of Stress, Anxiety, Depression And Feel Happy – Review

Book Review Meditation How to Meditate to Get Rid of Stress, Anxiety, Depression and Feel Happy by Will Huynh

About this book:

According to Zen Buddhism, life is full of suffering, which is brought about by our attachment to things and people. We all have those moments when we feel we are just about to give up in life (we are depressed), feel stressed by our past, and are anxious about our future. This is just normal to everyone around the world. But while some of us can handle the stress, anxiety and depression that comes with the challenges that life throws at us, there are those instances when we feel we cannot just handle it. During such times, we become angry with ourselves, situations and the people around us. We lose hope in our future and no matter how much we try to fake a smile, it just doesn’t work.

Well, do you know that you could end up committing suicide if you continue harboring stress, anxiety, and depression? And even if you don’t commit suicide, the simple fact that you are constantly depressed, anxious and stressed puts your body on overdrive, which means that you are likely to end up suffering from various health complications including but not limited to hypertension, heart disease, obesity, digestion problems and a lot more. Well, if you’ve already started experiencing those and want to change your live for the better, you probably need to start thinking of how to introduce meditation into your life. If you are new to meditation, you are likely to think it isn’t something you should even try because it is for the monks. Well, this isn’t true. In this book, I will show you how to meditate to fight stress, depression, anxiety and restore your happy self. Here is what this book will teach you:

Here Is A Preview Of What You Can Expect To Learn:

  • A Basic Introduction To Meditation And How It Is Helpful
  • How To Prepare For Meditation
  • How To Meditate For Stress, Anxiety And Depression Relief
  • How To Develop An Easy To Follow Meditation Habit That Can Transform Your Life
  • The Different Benefits That You Can Get If You Implement Meditation In Your Life
  • How To Exit Your Meditation Sessions Without Watering Down The Benefits You Would Otherwise Derive From Your Meditation Sessions
  • Important Tips You Need To Incorporate To Guarantee Maximum Meditation Experience
  • And much, much more!

Jenn’s Review:

Every so often, I go on book buying binges (read – I love finding free Kindle books on Amazon!), and I bought this particular little book several months ago, and sat down with it recently.

The author sets out valid arguments about meditation and its benefits in concise language that is easy to understand. He lays out a solid case in favor of why meditation is so good for you, and briefly talks about different ways to meditate.

However, where I got a little hung up (I’ve been meditation for years, but I don’t profess to know it all, by any means), is his suggested procedure for meditation. If I were a newbie to the idea of meditating, knowing myself, I would never end up on a cushion, getting down to the business of meditation, because… It would take me 3 hours to get through all the set up steps, I’d never find a place totally free of distraction to pull this off, and between starting the process and getting to the actual meditation, I’d have to tend to something else for my family.

In a nutshell, that part of the book, is a little overblown and over-complicated in my opinion (I’ve read and am reading, much better books on meditation and mindfulness where this area is concerned – reviews to come if they aren’t already done).

On the other hand, if you’re debating whether to begin a meditation practice, or whether meditation is right for you, this isn’t a bad book to start with, and the price makes it accessible to everyone (as of this writing, it is still free for both Kindle and audio versions).

Biohacking: A Beginners’ Guide to Successfully Employing Biohacks to Improve Your Health, Life & Wellbeing – Review

Book Review for BioHacking: A Beginner's Guide by Seth Laron - Personal Development/Nonfiction/Self Improvement

About the book:

Are you looking for a common sense approach to feeling healthier or reducing stress in your life? Then biohacking is for you.

Too many of us in North America today are battling some form of ill-health. Whether you are struggling with anxiety or your weight, you have probably tried it all—the latest fads and self-improvement books. But you probably have not tried “biohacking”.

”Self-trackers are pushing the limits of personal health.” Mark Moschel, Chief Technology Officer at Factor 75

“Biohacking” or the act of tracking your body’s statistics, such as heart rate, blood pressure and so on, is the latest and easiest form of self-improvement available. It has taken off with the advent of the various devices, but at its core it can be used even without such things. It is about common sense and listening to your body. In this book you will learn:

Preview:

  • #1 how to use the principles of biohacking to improve your mood
  • #2 how you can biohack your diet to be healthier and lose weight
  • #3 how meditation is one of the best forms of biohacking you can do for yourself.

Jenn’s Review:

This is another of those little books I picked up on a Kindle spree a few years ago, and dusted it off the other day while cleaning out some of my Kindle clutter. (I go on these huge binges of buying, and then… see my blog at Sage Wolfsong for more info on my battle with clutter of all kinds)

I’d heard of Bio Hacking before buying this book, but hadn’t really done much to understand what it was, or how it might be helpful. I could guess at it based on context (all the other “life hacks” out there), but some things get under my skin and pester me until I do something with them.

So, I sat down with this brief book (it’s less than 100 pages) to learn a bit about biohacking.

Good stuff, really. The author lays out a clear, concise map of what biohacking is, why it’s useful and how to include it in your life. If you want to understand what changes you need to make and why those changes are significant, this is a great place to start – not terribly detailed or technical, a quick, light read with a powerful punch.

And an awesome value!
