Origin – Guest Review

Guest Review by Mason Bushell for Origin by Dan Brown

About the book:

The #1 New York Times Bestseller (October 2017) from the author of The Da Vinci Code.

Bilbao, Spain

Robert Langdon, Harvard professor of symbology and religious iconology, arrives at the ultramodern Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to attend a major announcement—the unveiling of a discovery that “will change the face of science forever.” The evening’s host is Edmond Kirsch, a forty-year-old billionaire and futurist whose dazzling high-tech inventions and audacious predictions have made him a renowned global figure. Kirsch, who was one of Langdon’s first students at Harvard two decades earlier, is about to reveal an astonishing breakthrough . . . one that will answer two of the fundamental questions of human existence.

As the event begins, Langdon and several hundred guests find themselves captivated by an utterly original presentation, which Langdon realizes will be far more controversial than he ever imagined. But the meticulously orchestrated evening suddenly erupts into chaos, and Kirsch’s precious discovery teeters on the brink of being lost forever. Reeling and facing an imminent threat, Langdon is forced into a desperate bid to escape Bilbao. With him is Ambra Vidal, the elegant museum director who worked with Kirsch to stage the provocative event. Together they flee to Barcelona on a perilous quest to locate a cryptic password that will unlock Kirsch’s secret.

Navigating the dark corridors of hidden history and extreme religion, Langdon and Vidal must evade a tormented enemy whose all-knowing power seems to emanate from Spain’s Royal Palace itself . . . and who will stop at nothing to silence Edmond Kirsch. On a trail marked by modern art and enigmatic symbols, Langdon and Vidal uncover clues that ultimately bring them face-to-face with Kirsch’s shocking discovery . . . and the breathtaking truth that has long eluded us.

Origin is stunningly inventive—Dan Brown’s most brilliant and entertaining novel to date.

About the author:

He is a graduate of Amherst College and Phillips Exeter Academy, where he spent time as an English teacher before turning his efforts fully to writing. He lives in New England with his wife.

Mason Bushell Guest Review on Thrice Read Books for Dan Brown's Origin

Mason Bushell’s Review (guest post):

In true Dan Brown style this is an in depth and detailed work that challenges the religious belief system. In this case the story of creation and the origin of the human race. It all hinges on a big discovery made by one Edmund Kirsch. Robert Langdon is once again at the centre of the controversy when it falls to him to get the big discovery out to the world whilst on the run from those intent on keeping it hidden. The story is captivating and pacey throughout. It would flow very well if it weren’t for the five sides of the story being told in consecutive chapters. 450 pages encompass a whopping 104 chapters each jumping between different character views and story points. That little niggle aside, the big revelation is intriguing and worth the read for. The book is really well researched and well put together I give it a 4 out 5.

Dead kid in the mirror: check

Sam’s Review:

Hello again! How was your weekend? Today we’ll be talking about the Ghost Files by Apryl Baker. This is the first book in a series, and is becoming a major motion picture.

Matilda, or more commonly known as Mattie, has the ability to see ghosts, though everyone she tells that to thinks she’s crazy. Which is why she doesn’t tell anyone. But she may have to expose her secret in order to help rookie police officer Dan solve the missing persons cases of at least ten children, whose ghosts are the only clues she has, and bring a serial killer to justice. Can she avenge the deaths of the children, or will she join them and be the next victim? A true ghost story/murder mystery, Ghost Files was captivating for me, and left me ready for more. Plus, it has a great plot twist in the end, and Mattie tries not to curse. Now that is my kind of girl! I recommend this book to teenage and up ghost lovers, and teens and up only because it has some tense and violent scenes in it. Read the book for a good time, and a heroine unlike any I’ve seen. I don’t know about you guys watching at home, you might have read a book or watched a movie where the protagonist was like Mattie. Subscribe, leave a like, and enable notifications, and I’ll be back next week. Bye!

Evermore (Mer-Tales Book 4) – Review

About the book:

Mother knows best.

The underwater world of Natatoria is enjoying a long awaited period of peace — and with it, the merpeople’s very first chance to visit human civilization. Ash and Fin’s wedding marks the perfect opportunity for the mers to celebrate their newfound freedom. But when they return home to Tahoe to prepare, Ash’s absence from the human world has raised more than a few questions about where she’s been. When blaming fingers point to Ash and Fin as the culprits who burned down Fin’s home, even his mind-jacking mojo hasn’t stopped the authorities from issuing the happy couple an early wedding gift—a matching pair of arrest warrants.

Instead of bringing their families together, Ash and Fin’s upcoming wedding drives a wedge between the very cultures they’re trying to bridge. And when their reality takes an unexpected twist, Ash realizes her dual existence comes with a hefty price. Neither her human nor her mer family understand the sacrifices they’re asking of her, and as much as she wants to please both her mer and human mothers, she knows she’s one misstep away from breaking two maternal hearts.

But with humans becoming aware of the mer, Ash and Fin must scramble to save their families, their societies . . . and their love. The only thing they know for sure is that when it comes to Natatorians, old habits die hard.

And a royal should never get too comfortable.

Sam’s Review:

Hello, all of my fellow readers, and the writers who watch my reviews. Today we finish up the Mer Tales series by Brenda Pandos with the book Evermore, starring all of your favorite characters from the series, of course, as well as some new ones. In case you’re new, my name is Sam, and this is Sam’s Teen Reads Corner! Let’s get started.

Fin and Ash are ready to tie the knot. All they need to do is get Ash’s, erm, “surrogate” father’s permission. I know what you’re thinking. “Why are you so nervous? It’s got to be great having two families!” You wish. Ash has to please both of her moms, deal with her snarky sister, keep Fin from mer-mojoing her family and friends, and stay away from a stalker. Oh, can’t forget that she has a merling on the way! Plot twist!

Anyways, Tatchi and her adopted daughter, Nicole, try their best to help Ash with the wedding, but the merling makes things a tad bit difficult. Again, I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first two, for some odd reason, but in my opinion, it was a tiny bit better than Everlost, so it get four point five stars. I think that Ash kind of makes it better, and there’s so many new characters, so that might have something to do with the sudden four and a half star rating. There’s too much going on for me!

If you want to get more review like this, and become one of my fellow readers/writer (it depends on which one you are. Heck, you guys could be both if you want!), all you have to do is subscribe, enable notifications, and like the video. Oh, and if you guys have a book that you think that I’d enjoy, please, don’t hesitate to suggest said book. Stay bold, my readers and writers!

Sam’s Review:

So, we meet again! Good, it means that you are still watching my reviews. That is very encouraging, I mean it. And now, time for the book of the week: Everblue (Mer Tales Book 1) by Brenda Pandos!

Two friends, Ashlynn (Ash) and Tatiana (Tatch, twin sister of Fin), have lived separate lives, with Tatch being homeschooled to protect her family secret (they’re mer-folk!), and Ash being regular schooled. And they both have a plan to go to the same college. Only, they are in for a big surprise. When Tatch and Fin, Ash’s crush, get called away to the mer-world, Fin finds it hard to stay away from Ash, but if he goes to her, he risks the exposure of his world. And with threats of promises, the mer equivalent to marriage, in the air for Tatch and Fin, and senior year drama for Ash, plans may just fall apart, and Fin’s and Ash’s futures will change with just a single kiss.

Everblue is a captivating story, and it will leave you wanting more. Luckily, Evergreen is the next book, so you might want to keep an eye out for the review. Please subscribe, like and enable notifications, and I’ll be back! See you next week!

Sam’s Review:

Hello everyone, my name’s Sam, and welcome to the review for Mertales book 2: Evergreen by Brenda Pandos.

Ash is still getting used to being promised. Fin is on his way to Florida for his safety, which is killing Ash. Not only is she extremely lovesick, mer-folk exist, which is something she’s never really believed in, Fin’s cousin, Colin, is attempting to promise himself to Ash in order to make her spill the beans about where Fin is, so she’s in danger, her bestie has been forced promised to the prince of Natoria, and she still has to balance out her senior year of highschool. Not fun. Not fun at all. Oh, and one more thing. Colin has the hair brained idea that Ash is the runaway princess of Natoria, Galadriel. And just because she has a royal birthmark! C’mon folks.

While Ash is having mer-stalker issues, Fin is dealing with a royal pain, literally. Princess Galadriel is at the safe-house, and is driving Fin bonkers. Even worse, she looks exactly like Ash; the only difference is what comes out of her mouth. And Fin is Galadriel’s escort. He’ll need to take a risk and return home to Ash though if he wants to keep her safe from his uncle, Alaster, and his no-good cousin Colin. And he needs to bring Galadriel. Once they are brought together, a secret is revealed that will change the way Ash will lead her life, and her plans fall apart even more.

I loved this book, loved the book after it (don’t worry, it’s coming, guys. Hang in there!), and, well, I just love the series altogether. Leave a suggestion as to a book that you think that I would like to read and review for you, subscribe, like and enable those notifications! I’ll be back with the third book, later! And now, for my unofficial goodbye. In the words of Waysa, from the Serafina series, stay bold! Bye guys!

Sam’s Review:

Hello to all of my viewers, and welcome back to Sam’s Teen Reads Corner, and we shall be continuing the Mer Tales series by Brenda Pandos with Everlost. Instead of having Ash as the star, Tatchi’s story is told.

Tatchi has been forced promised to the jerk prince Azor. Even though her promising tattoo and royal birthmark that was supposed to come with the promise haven’t made an appearance, she’s fallen head over tail for the prince. However, the rebel that tried to take her and got a chunk taken out of his arm is now her bodyguard.

The longer she stays at the palace, the more secrets she finds, and none of them are good, and almost all of them are against her. Azor’s father, the king is dying and tries to force promise Tatchi (again!) to himself to free her, her promise is a fake, and Azor wants her to pull off a con.

While I do enjoy the series, this wasn’t quite as enjoyable as the other two, which, and this is just my opinion, is kind of a bummer. So, yeah, for ratings, it gets four of five stars. Shocker! Alright, readers. Please remember to subscribe, like, enable notifications, and if you have one, suggest a book that you’d think that I would enjoy, and I will attempt to do a review. Jenn’s Review:

I first saw this book on Amazon about a year ago when I started delving into learning about the Law of Attraction. I finally got around to buying it in December, and just finished it this week, as I’ve been slowly working through the exercises listed as I read.

Unlike a number of self-published, self-help books, this one doesn’t spend 50 pages convincing you that his methods work. No, instead, he dives straight into how to use the methods (the Personal Mastery Plan) and walks you, step by step, through creating a Plan for your own life.

Remember, I’m a planning freak, and this Plan soothed that part of me. Even before I had the complete Plan (all seven dimensions that Mr. Lodge goes over), I began to see changes in my attitude, my businesses and my personal life. This is not “so much bunk” as so many other planning guides tend towards, but real, honest, working methods towards achieving newer and greater heights.

Yes, unlike most similar length books, it took me almost two months to get through it – however, they’ve been life-altering, mindset-changing months that have set me on a path towards personal, vocational and financial success.

As a serial book reviewer, I’ve read countless books. Very few leave my desk with the words, “Everyone should read this book.” Even fewer leave me wondering how I can incorporate them into my daughter’s education.

This one has.

Jenn’s Review:

Book Review - Your First 100 by Meera Kothand Business and Marketing strategy http://bit.ly/TRB100Rev

I’m not new to Meera Kothand. Recently, I took an email course on newsletters from her, and was immediately hooked. So when she announced the release of Your First 100, I had to run to look at it, because in my “other” life/business, I’m working to start up a mentoring business to support the writing part of my life. (Reading supports the bookstore, mentoring supports the writing)

Your First 100 is no-nonsense and right to the point, but this isn’t one of those cheap-ey, short-form PDF books that so many online businesses bandy about. Meera dives in deep, provides resources, and give concise advice about how to build your audience from the ground up. All the way up through converting your audience to paying clients and beyond, to ensuring that those paying clients come back again and again, because of the consistent customer journey that delights them.

Admittedly, I haven’t finished the worksheets that Meera provides to help you through the process. I started to, and then got a bit lost in just enjoying what she was saying. Now that I’ve finished it, I’m going back to the beginning to work through the homework and worksheets that correspond to each section.

If you are launching any online business… If you already have an online business… Especially if your online business is struggling – you need this book.

It won’t overwhelm you with how to grow your Facebook page, or get more Twitter followers. This is a no-nonsense and down to earth approach to providing the best, authentic version of what you offer to your ideal customers.

The Stravinsky Intrigue – Review

Sam's Teen Read Corner review of The Stravinsky Intrigue by Darrin Kennedy

About this book:

Nine months have passed since psychic Mira Tejedor last walked the halls of Anthony Faircloth’s adolescent mind. All but family now, Mira is relocating to Charlotte, NC, not only for a much-needed change of scenery, but to further her burgeoning relationship with Dr. Thomas Archer. On the eve of her move, however, a new threat emerges.

Young girls from every corner of Charlotte are falling catatonic, a condition eerily similar to the illness from which Mira rescued Anthony the previous fall. Mira reluctantly agrees to help Detective Calvin Sterling with the case and soon finds herself pulled into a new pair of fantasy worlds, both borne from the brilliant mind of Igor Stravinsky.

In the world of The Firebird, Mira becomes the warrior Ivanovna and battles an immortal evil threatening to steal the girls’ souls for all eternity. In the Russian fair from Petrushka, she assumes the role of Ballerina, one of three magical puppets who dance at the whim of a cruel Charlatan. Torn between Moor and Clown, bizarre doppelgangers of the two vastly different men in her life, and threatened at every turn by a sorcerer who craves her very essence, Mira must navigate the cruel deceptions of both worlds and win, or her life and the lives of a dozen innocents will be forfeit.

Sam's Teen Reads Corner reviews Darrin Kennedy's paranormal suspense novel "The Stravinsky Intrigue"

About the author:

Darrin Kennedy - Author of the Fugue and Fable series

Darin Kennedy, born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is a graduate of Wake Forest University and Bowman Gray School of Medicine. After completing family medicine residency in the mountains of Virginia, he served eight years as a United States Army physician and wrote his first novel in 2003 in the sands of northern Iraq. His debut novel, The Mussorgsky Riddle, was born from a fusion of two of his lifelong loves: classical music and world mythology. His short stories can be found in various publications and he is currently hard at work on his next novel. Doctor by day and novelist by night, he writes and practices medicine in Charlotte, North Carolina. When not engaged in either of the above activities, he has been known to strum the guitar, enjoy a bite of sushi, and rumor has it he even sleeps on occasion.

Sam’s Review:

The Stravinsky Intrigue by Darin Kennedy is the sequel to The Mussorgsky Riddle, and it doesn’t disappoint this reader of the series. Mira is back on the case once more as she tries to find the one who the six comatose girls in the hospital. Taking more trips into the Exhibition, she discovering that instead of having all of her old friends, she’s caught in The Firebird, The Rite of Spring and Petrushka.

Once more, this book was incredible and fun to read, and there weren’t as many confusing moments in it, which is great. And just so you know, Mira won’t be the the main character in the next book. Sorry.

**Jenn’s note: This isn’t classified as middle grade or young adult. Since there isn’t much bad language or graphic violence in book 1, I let Sam tackle this series when she asked, because she is pretty good at knowing her own limits when it comes to lit.
