About the Author:

Author G. A. M. Morris, creator of Miao-Shan: The Awakening

I was born in London in 1963. We moved to Cape Town, South Africa when I was 8 years old. I studied at the University of Cape Town Business school. For most of my working life, I have been a collectibles, art, and antique dealer. In 2007 I became a commercial property broker. I started writing fiction professionally in 2010, during which time I wrote two complete novels, of which Miao-Shan is the second one. At the end of 2010, I returned to the property industry, without having acquired an agent. For the next six years, I wrote part-time. Two years ago, I started to work full-time as a self-published author, mainly selling on Amazon, under a pen-name. I currently have two other books completed (one an unusual spy thriller, and the other a time-traveling paranormal fantasy), which will be published at a later date. The time-traveling paranormal fantasy novel, I intend to convert into a graphic novel. I’m now concentrating on getting Miao-Shan published.

Brian’s Review:

Brian reviews GAM Morris' adult urban fantasy novel, Miao Shan: The Awakening on Thrice Read Books' review blog.

So upon reading this book, I decided to give this book 4 different reviews. First for story plot, second for world building, third for action sequences, and the final will be a combination of the previous 3. That being said, let me begin.

Story Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The story plot in my opinion was amazing. The story line is the only thing that kept me reading this book. More to come on that later. The author’s idea and plot was spot on and something a little different. I believe one would be hard pressed to find a better thought out plot. Any other negative thoughts was overshadowed by the sheer brilliance of the plot.

World Building ⭐⭐
As good as the plot was, the world building was lacking greatly. So much potential with so little descriptions. The author lost a lot by focusing more on conversation than descriptions. Some examples that are taken directly from the book, “Po Po had given her a necklace with a figure of Guan Yin, as a pendant. ” That’s the full description. No color, no metal, no length. Another example from the book, “Over the next four hours, Want Deshi measured, cut and sowed a traditional martial arts night operations outfit.” Again, missing the chance to really describe what the reader should be imagining. Instead, the reader is left, if like me, thinking of the Hollywood ninja clothes, that are quite certain to be anything but traditional, not to mention, this is Kung Fu from China and not karate or ninjitsu from Japan. Buildings, surroundings, and most everything else was quickly described leaving many important, and let’s just face it, wanted, information completely out. Instead of spending somewhere in excess of 75% of the story in conversation, the author should have used some of that space to build the world he was creating.

Action Sequences ⭐⭐⭐
There was plenty of action in this book. The reason I’ve only given this a 3 star is the quality of describing the action. Combat scenes felt rushed, or like they weren’t important when in this reader’s opinion, the action and combat should have been the front most next to world building. Fighting scenes were extremely rushed. For example, “Suddenly five men with long knives leaped out of the dark and were about to proceed to kill everyone. Lei instantly sprung onto her feet in a blur of movement, her legs started spinning, and her arms and hands started to move forward in a blur, in circular movements, thrusting and chopping. Within a minute all fine of the attackers were lying immobile on the ground.” These kinds of descriptions left me with the feeling of what really happened. The author lost a lot of potential by skipping details once again.

Over All ⭐⭐⭐1/2
Over all I give the book a 3 1/2 start rating. The plot being the only saving grace of this book. It’s my understanding this is the author’s first book, and if that’s true, that surely explains some of this, and I greatly expect he’ll improve upon that. So I would recommend the reading of this book, so long as you over look the minimal amount of descriptions. I also believe that as the author grows, his writing will too, and his books are going to be amazing.

Aaru – Review

About the Book

Aaru, David Meredith (The Aaru Cycle)

Adult Sci-fi/Fantasy 296 Pages

Self Published July 9, 2017

Rose is dying. Her body is wasted and skeletal. She is too sick and weak to move. Every day is an agony and her only hope is that death will find her swiftly before the pain grows too great to bear.

She is sixteen years old.

Rose has made peace with her fate, but her younger sister, Koren, certainly has not. Though all hope appears lost Koren convinces Rose to make one final attempt at saving her life after a mysterious man in a white lab coat approaches their family about an unorthodox and experimental procedure.

A copy of Rose’s radiant mind is uploaded to a massive supercomputer called Aaru – a virtual paradise where the great and the righteous might live forever in an arcadian world free from pain, illness, and death. Elysian Industries is set to begin offering the service to those who can afford it and hires Koren to be their spokes-model. Within a matter of weeks, the sisters’ faces are nationally ubiquitous, but they soon discover that neither celebrity nor immortality is as utopian as they think. Not everyone is pleased with the idea of life everlasting for sale.

What unfolds is a whirlwind of controversy, sabotage, obsession, and danger. Rose and Koren must struggle to find meaning in their chaotic new lives and at the same time hold true to each other as Aaru challenges all they ever knew about life, love, and death and everything they thought they really believed.

About the Author

David Meredith is a writer and educator originally from Knoxville, Tennessee. He received both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from East Tennessee State University, in Johnson City, Tennessee. He received his Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D.) from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee. On and off, he spent nearly a decade, from 1999-2010 teaching English in Northern Japan, but currently lives with his wife and three children in the Nashville Area where he continues to write and teach English.

Jenn’s Review

Wow… Just finished Aaru by David Meredith. I’ve had it in my TBR pile for quite a while, as it got lost in a storm of review requests. Sitting around an airport for hours had me flipping through my Kindle files, and I ran across this story, and quickly shuffled it to the top of my (now written) list! And now that book 2 is out… I am trying to figure out how to shuffle some more…

Thirteen-year-old Rose Johnson is dying. She’s tired of life, of pain, of hospitals and endless treatments. In short, she knows she’s run out of time. She doesn’t want to leave her sister, though, as they’ve been best friends all their lives. And Koren doesn’t want to lose her sister, either.

The man their father brings to meet Rose in the hospital, offers a “cure”, which Rose only truly understands when her body dies. She wakes up in a virtual Paradise, Aaru.

Koren doesn’t handle the loss of her sister very well – she falls into a depression, rebels against everything in her life, and loses all hope – a devastating thing at her young age. So when her father introduces her to the man who helped her sister, Koren isn’t very cooperative. Until they introduce her to Aaru, and her sister, Rose.

It’s a tough moment for Koren, but she’s so happy to see her sister, she agrees to become their spokesperson. Sudden stardom comes with a heavy price, which Koren doesn’t have a lot of say about paying.

This one’s a suspense/thriller, to be sure, but it’s a lengthy and sometimes difficult read. And, I would caution parents about the suitability for their own teens. While nothing explicit happens on the page, the problems of stalkers, child pornography, sex (it doesn’t happen on the page, but it does make an appearance as a problem in the story) and murder are all encompassed in the plot.

Additionally, I struggled with the author’s choice of writing style – this is a personal note, and not a condemnation of Mr. Meredith’s ability. He has a vast and, at times, obscure vocabulary. While this doesn’t pose a barrier for me, the story is mostly told from the perspective of the teenaged sisters, and the word choices the author favors didn’t quite feel authentic for the ages of the younger primary characters. They were fitting for the antagonist, however. Again, this is my own opinion of my reading experience – others might readily disagree.

All in all, I did enjoy the book. The plot, characters, and setting were all well-developed, and the conflicts and plot twists kept the story engaging. This book is for those who enjoy suspense and mystery, though I would suggest a more mature (not quite R rated) audience though, as some of the scenes might be a little too intense for younger teens.

Mindfulness – Review

About the Book

Mindfulness, Mark Williams, and Danny Penman

Adult Health 288 Pages

Rodale Books; 1 edition (November 13, 2012)

Mindfulness reveals a set of simple yet powerful practices that you can incorporate into daily life to help break the cycle of anxiety, stress, unhappiness, and exhaustion. It promotes the kind of happiness and peace that gets into your bones. It seeps into everything you do and helps you meet the worst that life throws at you with new courage.

The book is based on Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). MBCT revolves around a straightforward form of mindfulness meditation which takes just a few minutes a day for the full benefits to be revealed. MBCT has been clinically proven to be at least as effective as drugs for depression and is widely recommended by US physicians and the UK’s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence—in other words, it works. More importantly, it also works for people who are not depressed but who are struggling to keep up with the constant demands of the modern world.

MBCT was developed by the book’s author, Oxford professor Mark Williams, and his colleagues at the Universities of Cambridge and Toronto. By investing just 10 to 20 minutes each day, you can learn the simple mindfulness meditations at the heart of MBCT and fully reap their benefits. The book includes links to audio meditations to help guide you through the process. You’ll be surprised by how quickly these techniques will have you enjoying life again.

Jenn’s Review

I picked this book up some time ago, and due to Life happening (including buying a house and various upsets to my usual routine), this eight-week plan took me almost four months. Did that affect the overall benefits of the plan?

Not at all.

This book was worth taking my time to get through. Between practical explanations in each chapter, the downloadable, guided meditations, and independent practice, I finished the book with more tools than I began with (and I have been meditating for years).

The authors of MINDFULNESS lay a solid foundation of research and application before starting the reader on a series of weekly steps, gradually building on the previous week’s learning and practice.

This is more than a simple how-to book. You *could* just read straight through, but the better investment of time would be to tackle one chapter a week. Repeat the week until you are comfortable with the given practice before you move on.

I’ve read a number of books on meditation and mindfulness, but this is, by far, the most practical of them all. I’ve fallen back on the tools learned in this book to manage stress, anxiety, panic attacks and dietary issues. Definitely worth trying if you are interested in deepening your mindfulness.

Jenn shares her experience with the book, MINDFULNESS - AN EIGHT WEEK PLAN, on this edition of Thrice Read Books' review blog.

Jenn reviews Guy Kawaksaki's business start-up book THE ART OF THE START on this edition of Thrice Read Books' review blog

About the Book

The Art of the Start: The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything, Guy Kawasaki

Adult, Self Help

Tantor Audio; MP3 – Unabridged CD edition (January 19, 2009)

What does it take to turn ideas into action? What are the elements of a perfect pitch? How do you win the war for talent? How do you establish a brand without bucks? These are some of the issues everyone faces when starting or revitalizing any undertaking, and Guy Kawasaki, the former marketing maven of Apple Computer, provides the answers.

The Art of the Start will give you the essential steps to launch great products, services, and companies-whether you are dreaming of starting the next Microsoft or a not-for-profit that’s going to change the world. It also shows managers how to unleash entrepreneurial thinking at established companies, helping them foster the pluck and creativity that their businesses need to stay ahead of the pack. Kawasaki provides readers with GIST-Great Ideas for Starting Things-including his field-tested insider’s techniques for bootstrapping, branding, networking, recruiting, pitching, rainmaking, and, most important in this fickle consumer climate, building buzz.

At Apple, Kawasaki helped turn ordinary customers into fanatics. As founder and CEO of Garage Technology Ventures, he has tested his iconoclastic ideas on real-world start-ups. And as an irrepressible columnist for Forbes, he has honed his best thinking about The Art of the Start.

Jenn’s Review

Are you standing on a great idea, and have no idea how to launch your new business?

Enter The Art of the Start by Guy Kawasaki. Everything you’ve ever wondered (and quite a few things you didn’t know you should be wondering) about startups, venture capital, and getting your business baby off the ground, in one informative, humorous volume.

I picked this up, thinking it was a personal development book. It doesn’t quite fill those shoes (though there are points regarding this topic), but as a business owner, it hit home.

If you are wondering how to fund your project, win investors, or what the heck “bootstrapping” is, this is your book.

Kawasaki walks the reader through idea development, pitching, proposals, and team-building in The Art of the Start, with real-life examples from history and his own experiences with start-ups.

If kicking off a business is in your plans this year, start with The Art of the Start.

New book review on Thrice Read Books: Adult Nonfiction/self help - Your Next 24 Hours by Hal Donaldson

About the Book

Your Next 24 Hours: One Day of Kindness Can Change Everything, Hal Donaldson with Kirk Noonan

Adult, Self Help, 178 Pages

Baker Books (February 14, 2017)

If asked, who among us wouldn’t say we were kind people? But kindness is often manifested in feelings of pity or sympathy–especially when others are watching–rather than in deeds. And when it comes down to it, what good does mere feeling do for the world?

Your Next 24 Hours is about something much bigger–a lifestyle of kindness, without thought of reciprocation, extended toward every person in our lives, both friend and foe. Through powerful true stories of kindness lived out, this book shows readers the enormous difference they can make through small, doable acts of kindness in their families, communities, workplaces, schools, and churches. It shows how every encounter with another person is an opportunity to be kind–and a chance to change our world.

Readers of Your Next 24 Hours will find deep satisfaction and joy as they discover how they can be part of a revolution of kindness that starts with them and reaches out through every person their lives touch.

Jenn’s Review

Kindness is King, and the world could be an entirely different place if all of us made the choice to pay homage.

Through dozens of real-life examples, both famous and mundane, Hal Donaldson and co-author Kirk Noonan illustrate more than 20 ways and reasons to make kindness, not only a random act but a purposeful habit.

My teenager recently asked me, “Why are people so unkind?”

The answer to changing that is in this slender volume, as kindness is contagious.

If you’d like to reach out to others but aren’t sure where to start, I recommend letting this little book be your launch pad. Spend 24 hours in selfless kindness using the ideas in this book, and watch the ripples spread.

Healer – Review

About the book:

Healer by Susan Miura

YA Inspirational Fiction

Vinspire Publishing January 31, 2018

258 pages

A young adult novel from Vinspire Publishing

Hovering just below the surface of Shilo Giannelli’s average existence lays an amazing spiritual power. Late one night, her world erupts with the revelation that, like her great-grandmother, she has The Gift. But the power to heal isn’t something she can share with the soccer team, her genius little sister, or her boyfriend, Kenji. Definitely not Kenji.

Deep beneath Misty Morning’s tough façade is a lifetime of abandonment, foster homes and broken dreams. When her two-year-old son is abused by her boyfriend, her fragile world shatters…until Shilo prays for Tyler, and he is healed, leaving Misty grateful but incredibly curious.

Shilo can’t give Misty the answers she needs; she only knows she has a God-given destiny, and despite facing strained relationships, impossible decisions, and the threat of being hounded day and night for her abilities, she will fulfill it.

The journey Misty and Shilo take together unites them as friends but invites danger into their lives. And it will take a miracle for these unlikely friends to elude a gang bent on revenge, keep The Gift a secret, trust God in extraordinary circumstances, and hold on to the people they love.

About the Author:

Susan loves to wander. Beaches, mountains, deserts, caves and canyons…it doesn’t matter, as long as she’s surrounded by God’s amazing creation. When wandering isn’t an option, she’s an author, travel presenter, public relations professional and photographer. A native of the Chicago suburbs, Susan graduated from Northern Illinois University with a degree in journalism and a determination to become a reporter. From a newsroom in Berwyn, Illinois to a television station in Albuquerque, New Mexico, her dream became a reality. Back in her home state, she works in public relations for a library and is a member of Willow Creek Community Church and the American Christian Fiction Writers. Susan is happily married and the mom of a daughter, son, stepdaughter, and one incredibly adorable Cleo cat.

Sam’s Review:

Filled with religion, and magic, Healer is a good book. The author is Susan Miura, so please show her some love by reading her books.

Shilo, an Italian Christian, has the Lord’s healing power. This means that she can heal anyone, so long as God wills it. The gift runs in the family, but it has to remain a secret. If anyone knows about the gift, oh boy, reporters, sick people, injured people seeking out help, etc., will not leave her or her family alone.

Susan Miura’s Healer is a true fantasy with magic and a bit of drama. Even though it’s religious, I’m okay with that because I try not to judge people on what they write and what they like. Honestly, I can’t find any dislikes about this book, so that’s that.

More Praise for Susan Miura’s Healer

Susan Miura’s thought-provoking novel, HEALER brought out longings in me I’ve had for years. How I’ve wanted to have the gift of healing during times when loved ones were suffering, but to no avail. However, Miura’s ever-present theme of “be careful what you wish for” is carefully balanced with the supreme mes- sage of what faithfulness, acceptance and love do to heal our wounds and bind up our hearts. It doesn’t take a special gift to exhibit those, but the resulting miracle is just as powerful. Beautifully rendered. – Lisa Samson, author of Women of Faith’s Novel of the Year, Quaker Summer, The Passion of Mary Margaret, and Summer of Hope.

Miura pens a unique and moving tale of a young woman’s extraordinary spiritual journey amidst all the tangles of being a teenager. Evocative in its possibilities and yet totally relatable, this is a book that will not only keep any reader turning the pages, but also stop and think “What if that happened to me?” — Allie Pleiter, award-winning author of over 25 inspirational nov- els.

Talented author Susan Miura has crafted an engaging young adult tale of the power of faith, love, family, and friends. I can’t wait to read more of what Shilo does next with her amazing gift. –A.J. Cattapan, award-winning author of Angelhood and Seven Riddles to Nowhere

Muira’s own gift of writing well crafted young adult suspense shines in this page turning story. Shilo’s strug- gle to learn what her gift means for herself and those around her parallels questions many have about their identity and purpose. This diverse, sympathetic cast deals with weighty situations in between soccer practice and normal life in a seamless, enjoyable story. – Amy Alessio, multipublished author, speaker, and librarian.

Jenn’s Review

Ladies! Yes you! The one in the back of the room, trying to hide because, as big as your dreams are, you’re afraid that if you step out into the spotlight, they’ll figure out you’re a fraud. Yup. I’m totally talking to you.

I met Amber Hurdle on Twitter, and when I saw that she had a book for women entrepreneurs, I had to go check it out. I had RWA 2018 National Conference coming up. I run two businesses (at least, I pretended to for the longest time), and couldn’t seem to make any headway in building either. After I read the synopsis of Amber’s book, I bought it. No dithering, no joke. It shot straight to the top of my TBR pile.

The Bombshell Business Woman is all about growing up as a person AND a brand, building your company from the ground up, even if it’s a one-woman show. Amber doesn’t pull any punches – she’s been at the bottom, and speaks straight to the heart of the struggle that fempreneurs face every day.

The book comes with several workbooks that you can download, so that you are actively putting her steps into practice. And it includes a book club guide so you can build your own Bombshell Squad of like-minded women to read and grow side by side with. (I’m looking to facilitate my own Bombshell Squad group over at my Sage Wolfsong page on Facebook, IM me if you’re serious about making your business take off)

Personal Mastery – Book Review

About the Book;

I have been asked by hundreds of my friends: Courtney Lodge, what secrets have you used to achieve so much as such a young age?

How did you become: Deputy Superintendent of Police by age 26; Branch Manager at JNBS by age 30; CEO of GSB Credit Union by age 35; CEO of the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions (CCCU) with responsibility for over 342 credit unions in 18 countries by age 36; Author at 37; business owner (Strategic Corporate Interventions, SCI, Ltd) at 37, worked for the German BKA/FBI, met numerous presidents/prime ministers and other government officials, visited over 40 countries, and so much more…?

This book, Personal Mastery shows how you can do this and much more. It is not limited only to professional growth, but all areas of your life.

The 7 Dimensions (7Ds) of Personal Mastery are explained and you are then empowered to use tools and templates to get started in creating your very own Personal Mastery Strategic Life Plans.
Based on the level of your diligence and beliefs, you will see immediate improvements in the way you think and operate, and in the results you get in your life.

If you only knew how much money has flowed into my life before age 40, you too would want to jump on this Personal Mastery train before the month ends.

More importantly, however, if you knew the growth I have experienced in my intellectual, emotional, physical, spiritual and relational development, you would embrace Personal Mastery before today ends. You can maximize your potential…NOW!

Jenn’s Review:

I first saw this book on Amazon about a year ago when I started delving into learning about the Law of Attraction. I finally got around to buying it in December, and just finished it this week, as I’ve been slowly working through the exercises listed as I read.

Unlike a number of self-published, self-help books, this one doesn’t spend 50 pages convincing you that his methods work. No, instead, he dives straight into how to use the methods (the Personal Mastery Plan) and walks you, step by step, through creating a Plan for your own life.

Remember, I’m a planning freak, and this Plan soothed that part of me. Even before I had the complete Plan (all seven dimensions that Mr. Lodge goes over), I began to see changes in my attitude, my businesses and my personal life. This is not “so much bunk” as so many other planning guides tend towards, but real, honest, working methods towards achieving newer and greater heights.

Yes, unlike most similar length books, it took me almost two months to get through it – however, they’ve been life-altering, mindset-changing months that have set me on a path towards personal, vocational and financial success.

As a serial book reviewer, I’ve read countless books. Very few leave my desk with the words, “Everyone should read this book.” Even fewer leave me wondering how I can incorporate them into my daughter’s education.

This one has.
