About the author:

Roy Eugene Davis was born in 1931 in Leavittsburg, Ohio, approximately 40 miles south of Cleveland, and grew up in a farming community. In his early teenage years he frequented the public library, reading books on psychology, philosophy, and yoga. When he was 18 years of age, he read Paramahansa Yogananda’s Autobiography of a Yogi and immediately sensed a spiritual connection with Yogananda and the kriya yoga tradition. In December 1949, he traveled to Los Angeles, California, to meet his guru (teacher) and was accepted for monastic discipleship training.

Mr. Davis was ordained by Paramahansa Yogananda in 1951 and was appointed as the minister of the Phoenix, Arizona, Self-Realization Fellowship Center in March 1952. In late 1953, aware of a need to learn to live effectively in the secular world, he withdrew from the organization–but not from his relationship with the kriya yoga tradition or his commitment to serve. After 2 years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Fort Riley, Kansas, he began his mission as an independent teacher. Since then, he has taught in more than 100 cities in North America and in Japan, Brazil, Europe, West Africa, and India.

Some of his books are published in 10 languages and in 11 countries. He is also the publisher of Truth Journal magazine and writes monthly lessons for CSA members around the world.

Jenn’s Review:

For those of us that create as part of our chosen vocation, creativity can be a spiritual practice. In his short book, How to Use Your Creative Imagination, Mr. Davis lays out a simple framework for treating your spiritual practice as a creative practice.

Creative Imagination is a clear, concise read that can easily be finished in an afternoon (it’s only 29 pages in Kindle edition), and is worth saving for regular rereading.

Mr. Davis has extensive spiritual training, and this shows in this book. While he makes a number of valid points, I found his writing to be a bit preachy and judgmental at times. Despite those few moments, this is a worthy read for anyone embarking on a creative or spiritual journey (the two are intertwined and inseparable).

Awaken Your Divine Intuition – Book Review

This week’s book review is Awaken Your Divine Intuition by Susan Shumsky, DD.[Note: this post contains an affiliate link.]

This work on intuition has been on my wish list for several months. Recently, I received this as a gift. Sadly, the months of anticipation didn’t pay off.

The book covers a good deal of information (in a roundabout manner). Part one is dedicated mostly to the author’s own personal journey with meditation. Part two teaches what to expect during your “Breakthrough Meditation Session” (which is jam packed with testimonials about how wonderful the program and Dr. Shumsky are). I believe part three held the most value for me as an intuitive empath, as the author covers spiritual safety and how to protect yourself while meditating and practicing various spiritual practices (what’s safe, what’s not, and why). I do not personally agree with all of the author’s recommendations, but I am also of the mind that this does not discount the value of what she has to say in this section of the book. The final textual section of this book, “Inner Space Adventures,” covers a variety of anecdotes that demonstrate the extremes of virtually all of her warnings. 

Dr. Shumsky’s writing isn’t always easy to follow, and at page 100, I felt she was still trying to sell me on what she proposes and the value of her particular program (and her various other books, which she promotes endlessly throughout the entire 212 pages of text. After sifting through all the testimonials, I’d say that the actual meat of the book has some useful information in it, and the meditation that comes with the purchase of the book is deep and purposeful.

The author states that God is not attached to one particular religion, but I will warn potential readers that this book has a decidedly Christian bent to it. If such things offend you, I’d recommend staying away from this book. If you can see past that, the techniques and tips in this volume are worth reading. 

I’ve been trying to come to a conclusive decision regarding a recommendation on this book, and thus far (after 3 weeks), I’m still at a loss for a definitive good or bad. So, I’ll just leave this here for you to decide for yourself: 

This book has very valuable information in it for those who work with their intuition and for those who wish to develop a deeper Divinity-centered meditation practice. I believe that Dr. Shumsky could have filtered a good deal of the self-promotion and made the book more concise, however, I also think she (and her agent/editors) likely had reasons for leaving it in, besides just meeting a page-count goal. For the reader who is willing to wade through this mire, the book holds its own value.

Disclaimer: I am a productivity nut! I have so much on my plate on any given day, that I am always on the hunt for new ways to streamline my day, so… when I got Zak’s email about this book and his promo (I was able to get the book for free on Amazon for a limited time), I snatched it up and stuck it on my to-read list for a day I couldn’t come up with another book to read.

That out of the way, I had just such an opening not long after purchasing this little gem. And right out of the gate, I fell in love with the premise of this self-help book: Knowing what to do, and doing it, are two completely different concepts.

August of last year, I reviewed Level Up, by the same author, and since that book had a number of useful ideas, I looked forward to diving into this book. 

Mr. Khan’s editing still leaves some to be desired (though this book had fewer glaring mistakes than Level Up), however, the premise of the book, along with the concepts he outlines in Productivity Handbook are spot on.

As a fellow productivity fan, the concepts in this book are mostly things I’m already doing, i.e.: actually doing the work. You can study ideas and suggestions and concepts until the cows come home, but folks, if you don’t put it in gear and DO, you’re never going to get anywhere.

This book is a quick, easy read at just over 100 pages (105 to be exact). I was able to read it in a single afternoon, and in the introduction, Mr. Khan promises to lay out his concepts in easy language that a twelve year old could grasp. As the parent of a twelve year old, I’m very tempted to put him to the test, but for now, I’ll refrain. Sam already has a reading list for reviews that is amazing.

I can vouch for every single one of the ideas laid out in this simple volume. If you are aiming for some big goals this year, you’ll want this at the top of your reading list. As in – get the book now. Read it today. Don’t procrastinate. (Because procrastination gets everyone to the same place: nowhere)

Jenn’s Review:

I can honestly say I’m not convinced this qualifies as a book, but since Amazon sells it as such, I’m reviewing it as such. Magic Intentions: 5 Energised Affirmations by Don Trey is exactly what it says it is. Though he introduces them as magic spells, they are simply affirmations repeated a given number of times. Any student of the Law of Attraction and Universal Source will recognize them as such.

That said, this is a quick and easy read, and not difficult to keep on hand for inspiration when drafting your own affirmations. If you aren’t inclined to draft your own, then this short volume is perfect. The five included affirmations broadly cover most situations for which one might want to create an affirmation to keep their energy focused and positive while manifesting what they desire, be it better finances, romance or releasing what no longer serves.

As I mentioned, this e-book is a really fast read, and after a once-through, is worth keeping on hand for reference for novice Law of Attraction students or those new to affirmations in general.

Level Up – Book Review

It isn’t often that I do a review on a book that took me less than an hour to read, but this one, I think, is worth passing along (plus, the e-book is free on Kindle, so, why not?). Zak Khan’s book Level Up: Ways to be Productive, Manage Time and Get Things Done fits the bill.

In his e-book, Mr. Khan concisely sums up several ways to add time into your day, improve your health and life, and reach your goals faster. His no-nonsense approach is blessedly clear and to the point, if poorly edited in places. If you’re looking for ways to improve your personal, professional or romantic life, this is a great place to start.

If you are like me, and your body is worn down with inflammation and chronic pain, you struggle with high blood pressure, possibly diabetes, Jessica Campbell’s Anti-Inflammatory Diet Protocol: How to Beat Chronic Inflammation, Lose Weight, and Heal Your Body with Whole Foods needs to find its way onto your reading list.

I picked up the e-book format of this publication shortly after my doctor recommended an anti-inflammation diet for me. Her advice took me off-guard, and was unlike anything I’d heard before. Ms. Campbell’s book reiterates what my doctor told me almost two years ago, and when I picked this up and took the time to read it recently, it re-inspired me to get my eating back on track. Her advice deviates some from what my own doctor recommended, and I have found that I feel better avoiding grain, but the contents of this book are still simple, straightforward, and the recipes look absolutely delicious (I’m not much for actually following a recipe, they’re more of a springboard for what I do in the kitchen).
