Jenn’s Review:

Debut novels are always fun to read – it’s a gamble on the part of a book reviewer. Some are downright terrible (I don’t finish these, let alone review them). Others are amazing – well written, beautifully edited, brilliantly plotted and put-together.

J.L. Keathley’s debut novel, Distant Memories, falls somewhere in between the extremes. This book challenged my inner editor – and while the first half of the book was a challenge, the author has a method to her seeming madness.

Distant Memories is told from the point of view of a 16 year old girl. In style, if not in form, this book reads much like my high school journals. Conventional style and comma usage is out the window.

It took me half of the book to realize that this was intentional, and not faulty editing (my interview with J.L. confirmed my suspicions). Once I got my noisy inner editor to go sit in a corner and hush (because the author had a reason for how she wrote this book), this is an awesome plot line. And the best news? There’s more coming.

The final tally:

This isn’t an easy book to read from a style perspective. If you are someone who must have their novel in the standard, conventional style (each speaker in a conversation gets a new paragraph, commas in the right places) – this isn’t the book for you. If, however, you can approach a novel with an open mind, and enjoy a well-told story, this is an awesome debut for Ms. Keathley.

Update: This blog post went live before I got word that JL will be doing some editing and re-releasing this book. If you would prefer to get the updated version, hop into her Facebook group, linked above, and follow her to find out when it’s been released.

Sam’s Review:

Okay, so Distant Memories is a captivating story about a vampire-witch hybrid who’s trying to find her mom, basically. That’s it. That’s all the information you’re getting.

One of the things that I liked about this book was that it was captivating. I was drawn into the story from the first page. A couple of the thing that I didn’t like was how we didn’t see much of Legs, the main character’s tarantula, and the unfair cliffhanger at the end. Seriously, you think that there’s more to the book! Grr!

But I love it! Don’t get me wrong, I really, really love the book. It called out to me, in a way. Y’know, that moment when you pick up a book that you’ve never read before and it just calls you to you before you even look at it. Yeah. that kind of calling;

Dwarves of Calcus – Review

About the Book:

When she was thirteen, Snow Sabbia crash landed on the dwarves’ home planet of Calcus. After fleeing from her step-mother’s huntsman, seven brother dwarves took her in to hide and protect her. She has hidden for years on the peaceful planet, tinkering with old automobiles and pushing papers in the mine office.

Then, Timothy White shows up.

The shy, nervous, nerdy heir captivates Snow before she even knows who he is, and quickly she falls in love. But his high profile in society draws unwanted attention from her vengeful stepmother, who wants Snow dead.

Geneva believed Snow died years earlier and she had consumed her innocent heart. With her late husband’s wealth, Snow’s inheritance, in tow, she married a young lord, Conrad. Both are using each other—Geneva for his title and to have a child, Conrad for her money and beauty. But when Conrad lays eyes on his boyhood rival’s lovely fiance, Snow, his overwhelming desire for her reveals the truth to Geneva, that Snow lives.

Desperate to hold onto her wealth and power, Geneva seeks to kill Snow properly this time. Snow has the power to wield the one thing that can destroy her, so she cannot let the girl claim possession of the family heirloom, the Nevollo Sword.

Snow soon learns her step-mother knows she is alive. But she is a pacifist, so she must outwit Geneva and remain hidden… until Geneva, disguised as a child, presents her with an apple.

About the Author:

Born and raised in Australia, Katie’s early years of day dreaming in the “bush”, and having her father tell her wild bedtime stories, inspired her passion for writing.

She has a diploma in travel and tourism which helps inspire her writing.

Katie loves to out sing her friends and family, play sports, and be a good wife and mother. She now works as an Acquisitions Editor to help support her family. She loves to write, and takes the few spare moments in her day to work on her novels.

Jenn’s Review:

Snow White has been one of my favorite fairy tales for as long as I can remember. In the third installment of Katie Hamstead’s Fairy Tale Galaxy series, we get a fresh retelling (that’s only been hinted at in the first two books), of the Snow White story.

As you probably know by now, book 2 in this series wasn’t a big fav of mine, however, book 3, Ms. Hamstead is back in business with wit, likable characters (minus the villianous Geneva, of course), and a fast-paced plot.

I remember being young and awkward, especially in the social department – I could relate easily to both main characters. Snow is a capable, strong young woman, even if she has no grace when it comes to social situations (she’s grown up with dwarves, and NO humans), and Timothy isn’t the brave, dashing prince we’re used to seeing in this story – he’s a nerd and utterly socially inept (lest you believe he’s just a bumbling idiot, he’s not – the source of his social insecurity is laid out by the end of the book), but Snow is able to draw him out of his shell. And just when everything seems to be going well for them… Poof! Something comes up to keep them apart. Reminds me a bit of my own high school sweetheart (whom I eventually married, despite our own delays).

In the final analysis: Dwarves of Calcus is a winner in my book. Strong characters, well-defined conflicts and plot, and villains vanquished.

And since I enjoyed two of the three books in the series, and Ms. Hamstead has plenty of other material she can work with (other potential plots are hinted at throughout the series as it stands now), I’m hoping to see more of this series in the future.

Sam’s Review:

Telling the story of Snow White this time, Dwarves of Calcus explains the peace between Oran and Tyrone. See, Oran and Tyrone weren’t always allies. They were enemies at one point. But when Snow Sabbia meets Timothy White, it’s love at first sight. Now long after, about a couple of weeks or so, they’re engaged. Talk about moving quickly.

But Snow and Timothy (let’s just call him Timmy.) have one person in the way: Snow’s siren of a stepmother, Geneva. Literally, she’s a siren. Snow and Timmy get married, and Geneva gives Snow a poisoned apple. The rest of the story that you are familiar with takes over, moving this fascinating story along its tracks.

With twists and turns at almost every angle, a nerdy prince charming, and seven funny dwarves, Dwarves of Calcus is fun to and easy to read. Its for young adult audiences, and is the third book in a series.

Blog Tour post for Jenn's Review of In the Assassin's Arms by Katherine Hastings Adult Historical Romance on the Thrice Read Books review blog

About the Author:

Katherine Hastings, Author of Historical Romance "In the Assassin's Arms"

Katherine Hastings loves love. It’s why she writes romance novels. Getting lost writing a romantic adventure is one of her favorite pastimes. When she’s not on an adventure in her mind with her characters, she can be found at her home in Wisconsin snuggling her husband, two Boston Terriers, and the world’s naughtiest cat. Two things make Katherine want to leave her happy home these days… going for rides on her dressage pony or floating at the beach in her big inflatable raft. Writing her novels while floating in the lake is one of her ultimate pleasures… that and Fried Wisconsin Cheese Curds, of course.

Jenn’s Review:

Another awesome debut novel from Fiery Seas Publishing! Katherine Hastings’ historical romance, In the Assassin’s Arms is witty, fast-paced and engaging.

John and Charlie go back a long ways – to their childhoods, playing hide and seek and tag as they ran around John’s family estate. Their childhood friendship is shattered when Charlotte (“Charlie”) is ripped away, her father murdered in cold blood in John’s home. Charlie has always blamed John’s father, and the rival assassin organization that John and his father belong to, for her father’s death, and she’ll stop at nothing to avenge his murder.

When these two meet up again in as adults, sparks fly. They are attracted to each other while struggling with the blame each places on the other for the deaths of those they love. Despite their mutual mistrust, they must work together to solve the riddles behind a growing number of murders – before they’re both added to the list!

The banter between these two characters had me giggling – each is quick-minded and they’ve picked up right where they left off, competing with each other to see whose skills are more finely honed. Ms. Hastings serves up some piping hot sexual chemistry as well, with a face-paced plot that had me turning the page for more.

IWhile I immensely enjoyed the dialogue and narrative, I encountered a few spots where the conversation felt a little off; some lines felt too modern, or too casual for the setting and situation. It did not, however, affect my enjoyment of the book to give it any less than 4 stars.

In the Assassin’s Arms is the first book in a series, with book 2 expected to hit the shelves later in 2018. If Adult Historical Romance is your thing, then I would highly recommend checking out Katherine Hastings’ debut.

Jenn’s Review:

Holy guacamole, Batman! Tessa McFionne smashed her debut novel out of the park. You might already know that I’m a huge fan of Science Fiction Romance, and I’ve been looking forward to reading this book since we did the cover reveal back in December.

I was not disappointed.

The book kicks off with a hefty dose of WTF, as the hero, Khallym tries to figure out why a woman, a civilian woman of all things, is in the middle of his planned jail break.

The woman in question? Yeah, she’s having a mighty big WTF moment, too.

Khallum has a lot on his plate already – the rejected, disowned son of a ruling family, he’s taken to working with the Rebellion to knock an emperor off the throne. And now, he owes a life-debt to a female; an utterly foreign concept to his ship full of battle hardened soldiers.

Evainne, for her part, is utterly lost. She woke up in Boston, went through her normal morning routine, and stepped out her front door for her morning run – and found herself in the middle of a battle zone. Something, somewhere, went horribly wrong.

Evainne and Khallum have to bridge their communication and cultural gaps as they try to unravel the mystery of her appearance on the other side of the universe, and as they do, Khallum’s initial duty to protect her  morphs into something deeper.

To Discover a Divine is a fast paced, action packed, steamy adventure. Ms. McFionne focuses more on the mysteries surrounding Evianne’s sudden appearance than she does on the developing relationship, but the quick plot pace and intense attraction between hero and heroine more than makes up for that.

I will venture a guess (and will confirm this in my interview with Tessa), that this is book one of a series. Khallym and Evianne don’t exactly get a happy ever after in this book, and the ending definitely left me hungry for more of these two.

Jenn’s Review:

Head’s up, Romance fans! This is a quick read, but you might want a box of tissues to get through it.

Allison Mullinax’s debut romance novel Break the Line rocks. While this is a novella, and not quite long enough to qualify as a full novel (the paperback comes in at about 150 pages), it’s a brisk read that will keep you clinging to the pages (or your tablet) to keep turning pages. Her pacing and attention to detail could use a little polish, but the plot itself is well-turned.

The story of Benson and Danni-Rose is full of emotional tension (and a little sexual tension!), and the conflicts between them are easy to spot (but not easy to overcome).

Without revealing spoilers, I’m going to give readers this heads up: I found myself sobbing (not just weepy, trickly tears, but full on gasping-for-air bawling my eyes out) near the end of the book. I won’t say that everyone will have this reaction – the heroine’s emotional conflict, the reason for her inner conflict over falling for Benson, is a situation I have personally seen – a life cut short in the blink of an eye due to someone’s careless “fun”.

Ms. Mullinax hits hard and hits home with Break the Line. If you’re looking for a quick read that grabs you by the heart and won’t let go until you hit the last line, check out Break the Line.

**Note: I believe Allison has another romance due to be released later this year. I’m looking forward to it with eager anticipation. She’s definitely on my “New Writers to Watch” list.

Excerpt (with permission from the publisher)

Excerpt 2 from Chapter 2 of BREAK THE LINE by Allison Mullinax

As expected, half the town is jam-packed into the mid-size barn turned restaurant. Christmas lights are strung across the large wooden beams along the ceiling, and the entire restaurant is a sea of picnic tables smashed together. The Whiskey Bayou Boys are perched on an old handmade stage toward the back of the restaurant. The fiddles, banjo, and guitars have everyone tapping their feet. Upstairs in the “hay loft” are the pool tables and dart boards. Buckets of crawfish, corn, and smoked sausage are plopped down in the center of each table. If you want to order anything else, then you might as well find another establishment.

“Pass me the hot sauce, baby.” My dad stretches his hand across the table, and I give it over. I pinch the crawfish head between my fingers, and my mouth waters when it snaps off. It’s been too long since I’ve enjoyed a night out.

“I don’t wanna hear you mutter a single complaint tonight about heart burn.” My mom gives my dad a stern look as he douses the entire crawfish in hot sauce. He winks at her and tosses it into his mouth, making a sound of pleasure while he chews.

“You sure look pretty tonight, darlin’,” my Aunt Becky shouts across the table moments before the band fires to life on the other side of the room. I smile and give her an appreciative nod.

“It’s the blue, it always makes her eyes shine.” My mama smiles at me, and pats my hand beside her.

“She gets it from her mama.” Daddy gives Mama his best smirk.

“I still don’t want to hear any complaints from you tonight. No use in trying to butter me up now. And you best hope we have a bottle of antacid at home, because the drug store is already closed for the night.” Mama swats at his hand. But Daddy ignores her, reaching around and placing his arm across her shoulders.

“All right, all right.” He hands the hot sauce back across the table, and I can’t help but laugh at their banter.

The song comes to an end and the singer places his lips to the microphone. “Now if my eyes aren’t deceiving me, I believe I see Miss Danni-Rose here tonight.” The patrons of the restaurant begin cheering and clapping and I smile behind a pull of my beer bottle.

“No way. Not tonight, Rickey!” I holler out across the barn, knowing I’ll more than likely give in. I’m two beers down, and the easy-going nature of the town is washing over me like a warm bath, replacing the anger I felt earlier in the day.

“Awww. Come on now, Danni, you don’t want to disappoint the fine citizens of this town. What do you say, folks? You feel like hearing Danni-Rose sing to us tonight?” Again, the barn comes to life with applause. I stand to my feet and the noise level raises another decibel.

“That’s my baby,” my dad yells to the table next to us as I scoot my way past them.

“One song,” I say, holding up my finger to Rickey, approaching the stage. He reaches his hands down and pulls me up with a grin stretching across his entire face.

He steps away from the microphone and holds his hands out in front of him for me to take his place. I wave over to the other band members, and they return with a smile. I curl my fingers around the microphone, feeling the cool metal against the palm of my hand. It’s been too long, but something in the air tonight has me feeling free, more than I’ve allowed myself to feel for quite some time.

I scan the faces of the room, and it’s then that I see him. That fisherman is tucked away in a corner booth, and his brown eyes are boring holes into mine. I feel the smile melt off my face, and I’m instantly set on fire with anger. I watch when he pulls a tumbler of dark liquid and ice to his lips, and I swear I see him smiling behind it.

Secrets of Bennett Hall – Review

About the book:

SECRETS OF BENNETT HALL, by Jordan Elizabeth

Series: Return to Amston Book Two

Genre: steampunk, adventure

Publisher: Curiosity Quills Press

Date of Release: January 30, 2018

Cover Artist: Eugene Teplitsky

Description:

Darkness once twisted Adelaide Dinsmore’s mind, but she thought she had grown out of that. Her job as a teacher in Hedlund proved that – until she discovers one of her students dead and the town turns against her. As her mind starts to crumble, she is offered a new job, this time as a governess for Gentleman Bennett’s granddaughter back east.

Bennett Hall is a sprawling manor of winding tunnels and manicured lawns, and the fence is really just for show. The little girl, Theodora, is a delight, albeit quiet, and the Bennetts are kind enough, especially the dashing young Joseph. So what if one of the servants sends chills down her spine every time he looks at her? Surely that, and the noises in the night, are figments of her imagination. She won’t allow the past in Hedlund to tarnish her future at Bennett Hall.

Then, Theodora begins to speak of a Villain who haunts secret passages in the manor, and Adelaide stumbles upon a sealed off wing where ghosts whisper from the shadows. Twisted inventions fill the basement and the villagers are wary of the Bennett family.

The longer she stays at Bennett Hall, the less likely her chance for escape, but she cannot leave Theodora or Joseph. The darkness in her mind might be the only thing to save them.

Jenn’s Review:

I just finished reading this book… And frankly, I’m a bit breathless.

I’m arguing with myself about how best to write a review for this new release, because each option I present, carries with it the chance for a spoiler, so I will keep this brief.

Bennett Hall is the second book in the Return to Amston series, though the only connection between the two seems to be a vaguely mentioned side character (from another series, I’m gathering), and a common “big city” and wider world. The plots appear to be, in no other way that I can find, otherwise unrelated.

I enjoyed Bennett Hall far more than Runners and Riders. The mystery was deep and complex, and the solution was… erm… unexpected. The budding romance between Adelaide and Joseph adds a romantic element, and sweet little Theodora is every nanny’s dream.

Jordan’s character and plot development has grown by leaps and bounds between this book and Runners, and Sam (hostess of Sam’s Teen Reads Corner) will be reading this sometime in the near future.

If you haven’t read Runners yet, while I recommend the book on its own merit of an engaging story line and relate-able characters, reading these books in their published order isn’t strictly necessary.

In summary, I absolutely loved Bennett Hall, and look forward to further mystery-adventure-romances from Jordan Elizabeth.

Jenn’s Review:

Book Review - Your First 100 by Meera Kothand Business and Marketing strategy http://bit.ly/TRB100Rev

I’m not new to Meera Kothand. Recently, I took an email course on newsletters from her, and was immediately hooked. So when she announced the release of Your First 100, I had to run to look at it, because in my “other” life/business, I’m working to start up a mentoring business to support the writing part of my life. (Reading supports the bookstore, mentoring supports the writing)

Your First 100 is no-nonsense and right to the point, but this isn’t one of those cheap-ey, short-form PDF books that so many online businesses bandy about. Meera dives in deep, provides resources, and give concise advice about how to build your audience from the ground up. All the way up through converting your audience to paying clients and beyond, to ensuring that those paying clients come back again and again, because of the consistent customer journey that delights them.

Admittedly, I haven’t finished the worksheets that Meera provides to help you through the process. I started to, and then got a bit lost in just enjoying what she was saying. Now that I’ve finished it, I’m going back to the beginning to work through the homework and worksheets that correspond to each section.

If you are launching any online business… If you already have an online business… Especially if your online business is struggling – you need this book.

It won’t overwhelm you with how to grow your Facebook page, or get more Twitter followers. This is a no-nonsense and down to earth approach to providing the best, authentic version of what you offer to your ideal customers.

Excerpt from Chapter Sixteen

Nola shuddered as she took the step that carried her from the road onto the bridge. The metal beneath her clanged with every step. The noise of the guards’ heavy boots shook the air and rattled her lungs like a vicious tolling bell, counting down the steps she had to take before she reached the middle of the bridge.

A line of people approached from the other side, holding torches and lights high in the air. They didn’t have any weapons Nola could see, but if they were wolves or Vampers, they wouldn’t need guns to kill the guards, or Nola.

Finally, Captain Ridgeway held up a hand, and the guards stopped as one.

The silence rang louder in Nola’s ears than the clanging of the bridge had.

The group from the city stopped fifty feet away. There were nearly twenty of them in a tight pack, all tense, ready to fight or run.

She hoped they would choose to run.

“We were told we could speak to Nola Kent,” the man at the front of the pack called from across the gap.

The man was tall with sinewy muscles. His torn clothes hung loosely on his frame. Even in the chill night air, the man wore short sleeves and seemed unbothered by the cold. In the dim light, Nola could barely make out the reddish hue of the man’s eyes.

A werewolf.
