About the Book

Markswoman; Rati Mehrotra
YA Adult/New Adult; Dark Fantasy; 384 Pages

Harper Voyager (January 23, 2018)

An order of magical-knife wielding female assassins brings both peace and chaos to their post-apocalyptic world in this bewitching blend of science fiction and epic fantasy—the first entry in a debut duology that displays the inventiveness of the works of Sarah Beth Durst and Marie Lu.

Kyra is the youngest Markswoman in the Order of Kali, one of a handful of sisterhoods of highly trained elite warriors. Armed with blades whose metal is imbued with magic and guided by a strict code of conduct, the Orders are sworn to keep the peace and protect the people of Asiana. Kyra has pledged to do so—yet she secretly harbors a fierce desire to avenge her murdered family.

When Tamsyn, the powerful and dangerous Mistress of Mental Arts, assumes control of the Order, Kyra is forced on the run. She is certain that Tamsyn committed murder in a twisted bid for power, but she has no proof.

Kyra escapes through one of the strange Transport Hubs that are the remnants of Asiana’s long-lost past and finds herself in the unforgiving wilderness of a desert that is home to the Order of Khur, the only Order composed of men. Among them is Rustan, a disillusioned Marksman whose skill with a blade is unmatched. He understands the desperation of Kyra’s quest to prove Tamsyn’s guilt, and as the two grow closer, training daily on the windswept dunes of Khur, both begin to question their commitment to their Orders. But what they don’t yet realize is that the line between justice and vengeance is thin . . . as thin as the blade of a knife.

About the Author

Writer, traveler, and full-time working Mom. I’m looking for a way to clone myself. Or, failing that, get a robot to do all my boring work so I can write full-time. I am represented by the wonderful Mary. C. Moore of Kimberley Cameron & Associates. My first book, Markswoman, is scheduled for publication in Jan 2018 by Harper Voyager.

I’m a bookworm – always have been. A few of my favorite writers are Gene Wolfe, Margaret Attwood, Ursula Le Guin, Philip Pullman, Octavia Butler, Jack Vance, Neil Gaimam, Stephen King, JRR Tolkien, JK Rowling (who can’t love Harry Potter?) and – yes – Jane Austen. I love to read and I love to write. Check out some of my stories at http://ratiwrites.com/short-fiction/

Jenn’s Review

I picked this book up on a whim, unclear about the age range, and opted to give it a read before turning it over to my 13-year old. Having finished it in a little over a day, I can say that I’m glad I read it first. Mostly because it was just that good! (And teenagers don’t always think about spoilers)

Kyra is the youngest Markswoman in her Order, and her first kill sets into motion a chain of events that could undo the fragile life that humanity has carved out for itself on Asiana. And when her beloved leader and mentor dies suddenly and mysteriously, Kyra is forced to steal her dead teacher’s blade and must flee to fight another day.

Her path leads her to Rustan, a sullen Marksman with a guilty conscience, who is tasked with training Kyra for the fight of her life. A member of the only male Order on Asiana, Rustan must prove himself to Kyra, who’s been taught nothing but scorn for her male counterpart.

As Kyra’s duel grows closer, secrets about her past and his slowly simmer to the surface, their feelings for each other growing, despite their vows that leave a future for them just out of reach.

The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, and I am eagerly awaiting book 2’s release in a few weeks. I give it high marks for world-building, with both touches of science fiction and fantasy, deeply steeped in Eastern wisdom and practice. High marks, also, for well developed, strong characters. Even the sweet-natured Nineth and Shurik show up with their own brand of strength (and their own flaws). I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Jenn’s Review

I’m already a fan of Katie Ruggle’s romance writing, and Rocky Mountain Cowboy Christmas is exactly on par for what I’ve come to expect from her contemporary romantic suspense.

Camille Brandt takes the definition of Town Eccentric to its fullest potential. She’s a loner and lonely, being around people makes her anxious. When Steve Springfield returns to town, she’s in danger of losing her heart to him, all over again, as mysterious fires start breaking out around town.

Firefighter and single dad Steve moved his children home to his family’s Christmas tree farm, hoping to find healing and safety after all they’ve lost. When he comes face-to-face with a woman he’s never been able to forget? And she’s in danger?

All bets are off.

Rocky Mountain Cowboy Christmas is a steamy little romance with adorable secondary characters (Steve’s kids are a hoot!), and unforgettable main characters. The mystery will keep you guessing right up until the reveal, with plot twists and little curveballs.

Lucian and her family have sworn to protect Marjorie from these nightmarish beasts, but Marjorie isn’t sure she can trust them. They keep secret after secret and, even after Marjorie has begged for them to tell her everything, they continue to keep her in the dark.

Marjorie struggles with her own mortality as she embarks on a futile journey to remain alive and reason with the beings that are hunting her.

She finds out the hard way that humans don’t matter on the other side of the veil. Unless Marjorie has something of use to offer, she’s better off dead.

Book 2 in the Marjorie Diaz Series.

About the Author

Desdemona Wren is a novelist who writes gay fiction with monsters, witches, and actual plots. She’s from Seattle, WA, but currently resides in the mystical land of Northern California. Where everybody wears coats all the time, nobody says ‘brah’, ‘bruh’, ‘bro’ or any variation of that word, and absolutely nobody surfs.

She has two cats named Oliver and Ophelia who have traveled the world. From The Great Smoky Mountains, to the tallest peaks of The Cascades, and even to the Grand Canyon; they’ve been everywhere. For more information on future books, visit her website at http://desdemonawren.com

Jenn’s Review

Holy cow! Desdemona Wren hits this one out of the park, as Marjorie Diaz returns for her continuing story in this twisty, action-packed sequel.

Marjorie has some serious problems for a recently-graduated college student. Her dream internship is down the drain and staying alive means living in the prison that her best friend’s family calls home (actually, it’s an enchanted mansion, but she never knew they even owned a mansion before she got marked for death, so… what-the-heck!).

She’s got some serious trust issues to work out before someone manages to make good on the bounty that she’s got riding on her hand. Her ex-boyfriend is a member of a monstrous family that wants her dead. In general, this twenty-something is having the mother of all bad days.

Ms. Wren has taken her writing to the next level in this second installment of the Marjorie Diaz story. She’s kept the action moving forward and threw a little romance into the mix for a little variety. I look forward to seeing where we go next.

True heroes will do anything to protect the women they love…

As the newest recruit at Search and Protect, Raul has a lot to prove. Luckily, he’s got the best friend and partner a man could ask for: a highly trained, fiercely loyal German Shepherd Dog named Taz. Together, Raul and Taz make an unbeatable team. But their first mission in Hawaii really puts them to the test when an international kidnapping ring sets its sights on the bravest woman Raul’s ever met . . .

Mali knows her latest job has put one hell of a target on her back. And on this small island paradise, there’s nowhere to hide. With a service dog like Taz, Mali feels safe. Sharing close quarters with a smoldering muscle-for-hire like Raul, she feels something else – an unexpected wave of desire. Raul feels it too. But when the kidnappers make their move, he’s got to turn that slow-burning passion into hard-hitting action – and save the life of the woman he loves.

About the Author

Piper J. Drake is a bestselling author of romantic suspense and edgy contemporary romance, a frequent flyer, and day job road warrior. She is often distracted by dogs, cupcakes, and random shenanigans.

Jenn’s Review

Action, suspense, kidnappers, and service dogs merge with spectacular results in Piper Drake’s romantic suspense, Total Bravery.

Raul is the new guy on the team and is still settling in with his new K9 partner, Taz. He’s certainly not looking for a fling, let alone a relationship.

Until he runs into Mali.

Her research brought her to Hawaii. It’s also brought some unwanted attention from a top sex-traffic ring. Can she let go of her objective long enough to let Raul and his team keep her safe?

I absolutely loved this book. Drake weaves a fascinating plot full of emotion, tension, and steamy attraction. Two thumbs up and four-stars.

Remember Yesterday, Pintip Dunn (Forget Tomorrow)

Teen, Science Fiction, 420 Pages

Entangled: Teen; Reprint edition (September 5, 2017)

Sixteen-year-old Jessa Stone is the most valuable citizen in Eden City. Her psychic abilities could lead to significant scientific discoveries―if only she’d let TechRA study her. But after they kidnapped and experimented on her as a child, cooperating with the scientists is the last thing Jessa would do.

But when she discovers the past isn’t what she assumed, Jessa must join forces with budding scientist Tanner Callahan to rectify a fatal mistake made ten years ago. She’ll do anything to change the past and save her sister―even if it means aligning with the enemy she swore to defeat.

The Forget Tomorrow series is best enjoyed in order.

About the Author

Pintip Dunn

Pintip Dunn is a New York Times bestselling author of young adult fiction. She graduated from Harvard University, magna cum laude, with an A.B., and received her J.D. at Yale Law School.

Her novel FORGET TOMORROW won the 2016 RWA RITA® for Best First Book, and SEIZE TODAY won the 2018 RITA for Best Young Adult Romance. Her books have been translated into four languages, and they have been nominated for the following awards: the Grand Prix del’Imaginaire; the Japanese Sakura Medal; the MASL Truman Award; the TomeSociety It list; and the Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award.

Her other titles include REMEMBER YESTERDAY, THE DARKEST LIE, GIRL ON THE VERGE, STAR-CROSSED, and MALICE.

Sam’s Review

Remember Yesterday is the sequel to Forget Tomorrow and let me tell you, it is a great as the first one. Told in Jessa’s POV, Jessa is Callie’s lil’ sis, this happens after Callie kills herself and destroys almost every hope of discovering future memory. Filled with romance, suspense, and anger, this book is hard to put down. Like, really, really hard.

Ten years after Callie killed herself to save Jessa, Jessa and Ryan are breaking into Mikey’s lab and being trouble-making teenagers. Plus, Tanner, the scientist about Jessa’s age is catching her attention. She swore never to side with the scientists. After all, they took her so she could become a friggin’ guinea pig. But all her efforts are for nothing, and her search to find a way to bring back Callie has narrowed down to one person, her thirty-one-year-old father.

I loved this book for its dystopian feel. It has a great and amazing storyline. If I had to describe the book in two words, it’d be, “beyond words.” That’s how good this book was. Jessa and Tanner make a good team, and Mikey plays the over-protective father figure rather well, but I didn’t like how it got a little confusing. Plus, a major plot twist like Callie being in a coma for ten years, and Jessa and Tanner being the ones that Callie encountered in the past, hit me like a brick wall. It was still incredible and interesting to hear from Jessa’s POV. I’m curious who will be the one telling the story in the third book.

Detective Agnes Malloy is stunned… Jack the Ripper is back! Two women are found brutally murdered in modern-day Denver–their M.O. identical to the victims in 1888 London. But Agnes has no clues to the murderer. Women are terrified, and if Agnes doesn’t solve the case, the Denver police commissioner will have her handing out parking tickets. Her troubles increase when a mysterious man appears, claiming to be with the FBI. But no one called them. He insists that she needs his help–her life depends on it. It’s up to Anonghos, the chief security officer of the Orion, to stop a deadly alien from killing the Zalarian’s designated mates. He’s cut off from his ship, and to make matters worse, he doesn’t know who the alien is and must wait for him to strike. His only hope is to stay close to the curvy detective who just happens to be his mate, without her accusing him of being the murderer. The body count is about to skyrocket and only by working together can they defeat an enemy bent on destroying both their worlds.

Jenn’s Review

I’ll admit it – I’m a girl that frequently picks her romance novels (and about 75 percent of my other reads) by their covers, and when I saw the cover for M.L. Guida’s Madness Unhinged at a writers conference, I wanted it. Bad. Top it off with sexy science fiction and dragons, and I was all in.

Anonghos has been handed the assignment of his life: Stop a deadly alien shape-shifting assassin from killing the human mate that the Fates have found for him. On a distant planet. Other human women are at risk, all of them fated for his kin, a quickly dying race of dragon shifters on Zalara.

Agnes is tired of living in her father and brother’s shadows. She’d very much like to be recognized for the good police detective she is, but her brother’s constant taunting and reminders of her psychic abilities keep getting in the way. Evey logical conclusion she draws is discounted, and women are dying. Jack the Ripper seems to be back, and he’s terrorizing the women of Denver, Colorado. When a stunningly handsome man keeps showing up at Agnes’ crime scenes, she finds it difficult to believe he isn’t the killer, much less that he’s there to help her solve the crimes, and keep her from becoming a victim herself.

As far as plots go, this one wasn’t bad. The characters are a bit stiff and won’t quite shine as they could. Sexual tension abounds and is well-worked, but the world-building could’ve taken a little more polish.

My single biggest annoyance was the heroine’s psychic abilities. She does her best to draw logical conclusions that are founded on actual evidence. If anything, she seems to try to ignore the ghosts that would otherwise direct her to clues and works to prove herself as a good detective (which, honestly, she seems to be). However, where this thread goes awry is how often it’s harped on by people that should know better. Her chief and partner automatically discount every good lead she has. Ad nauseum. Her brother, now an FBI agent, joins in and uses his own accomplishments to tear his sister’s reputation to shreds, over and over. About half-way through the story, the reader should have a pretty good grasp that the men in Agnes’ life are chauvinists, but the author continues pounding that thread until someone gets seriously hurt.

This is an adult romance, both because of the sexual content and because of the graphically depicted murder scenes. It’s a quick, steamy read, ideal for science fiction romance fans.

Jacque and her two loudmouth friends are back, including Fane. Filled with humor, love, and bravery, Blood Rites has you coming for more. Now, allow me to explain this book.

Jacque and Fane are finally ready to bond, until her Alpha father’s Beta steps in and almost kills her, determined to make her his mate. Really? Anyways, she’s in the hospital, along with seriously injured, dirty minded, Jen. She’s stolen from the hospital by the Beta and is almost killed. Good thing that she can reach out with her mind and call Fane.

I loved this book. The plotline is good, and I can connect with Jacque and her friends because that would be us in real life. However, it’s literally repeating the first book for a plot, but at least it’s not in need of a challenge to win her. After months of reading the first book, I was glad to read this one.

She’s everything he’s ever wanted…
Will she ever trust him with her secrets and let him in?

Swansong is a multi-cultural romance with a happy ever after.

Sarah Pendleton was born into a life of wealth and privilege, raised in the shadow of her famous soprano mother and her father, an equally famous composer. Shy and retiring, and treasuring her anonymity, Sarah left the world she grew up in to make her own life in the coastal town of Santa Barbara, California.

A visiting University professor of Arabic literature from the small oil-rich country of Taqara, Khalid Al Mansour is the eldest son of a Taqaran diplomat and an independent American artist. He’s never settled down in one place, but that’s because he’s never found what he wanted… until one evening, he sees the lovely belly dancer at a small, smoky cafe downtown.

Khalid falls hard for Sarah… and she has feelings for him too…
But sometimes secrets have a way of tearing lovers apart.

Jenn’s Review

Allie McCormack comes through again with the premiere of her multicultural romance series, Sons of the Desert. Swansong is the story of Sarah and Khalid – a seemingly carefree dancer and the scholar-sheikh.

Sarah feels like an entirely different woman as she steps out onto the floor as Cassandra when she performs as a belly dancer for the first time. Cassandra is the antithesis to Sarah’s demure, shy personality, and the wild, sexy dancer has caught the eye of a wealthy Arab man.

Khalid knows, from the moment Cassandra catches his eye, that he must get to know the woman behind the veil, who captures the spirit of the music in her every move on the floor. But the woman eludes him, and when he finally manages to corner her and convince her to go to coffee with him, he discovers someone who can end his loneliness.

Sarah has secrets, though, and her upbringing has trained her well to play her cards close to the vest. Can they overcome her past to love all the way to forever?

Swansong is an adult, multicultural romance set in sunny Santa Barbara, California. Rich settings and beautifully rendered characters sit in a plot that will keep you turning page after page. This is book 1 in the series and a fantastic addition to Allie McCormack’s contemporary romance portfolio.

This is the first part of a Trilogy.

Jenn’s Review

I picked this book up to read a quick sample, after the author, Mala Mukherjee, contacted me about a possible review. After reading the introduction, I chose to add this story to my reading list for two reasons: first, it isn’t written from a Western perspective and second, the author is upfront and honest about where the story came from. If you’re looking for a historically accurate tale, this probably isn’t for you, however, as Miss Mukherjee explains in the book’s first pages, she’s spun a fanciful tale around an archaeological mystery.

Welcome to Nalanda, and the Indus subcontinent in the age of the Huns. Nalanda is a center of learning, removed from politics, though it will not remain untouched by the coming war that looms over the land.

Prakhashaditya is a disgraced prince who renounced his claim on the throne to retire to a life of learning, if only for enough years to secure the knowledge of elemental weapons that might stand against the Huns’ mystical arsenal.

His teacher sends him to one of the department heads of Nalanda, to specifically study alchemy, and everything goes wrong when Prakhashaditya stumbles into a confusing situation between local villagers and a merchant caravan.

Confusion ensues, as court intrigues tangle and twist around each other. Hidden plots and deceptions add up, war breaks out, and survivors emerge with the truth of their identities – few of the major players know the whole truth and even fewer know who they truly are.

This was a long read, and in the first half, I frequently found myself out of the plot and lost in long descriptions of settings and people. Miss Mukherjee has done a thorough job of world-building and character creation. However, at several points in the book, I nearly gave up, as the description frequently engulfed the story. Eventually, the author does get out of her own way, and the story flows well – leaving me glad I didn’t surrender.

As a word of caution, this book is not written by a native English speaker (I am uncertain if the book was translated or if the author wrote this in English herself), and this shows up in virtually every paragraph. At times, what the author intends to say is unclear, however, I reached a place where it simply became a facet of the narrative.

Under the faults, this is a thrilling story, with unexpected plot twists, mysteries, intrigue, and danger. Definitely worth the effort to read.

Gold may not be the only treasure they find.

As they race to find the treasure, Simon and Vivian must fight the men hunting her down… and the feelings for each other growing each step of the way.

With part of a stolen treasure map in her possession and mercenaries hot on her trail, Vivien runs to the one person she knows will keep her safe. Captain Viktor. But when she arrives at his ship, it isn’t her oldest friend commanding it, a new man has taken his place. Captain Simon Blackmore. Though reluctant to work with this imposter, his skills both as a pirate and an assassin are exactly what she needs to find this treasure… and stay ahead of the men who want their map back.

Half the treasure as payment for protecting the fiery courtesan convinces Simon to escort her and help uncover Captain Avery’s lost loot. Danger nips at their heels every step of the way, and her obstinate personality makes the already monumental task even more difficult. But soon they are fighting for more than just staying alive… they are fighting the feelings for each other that are even more dangerous than the men hunting her down.

Can they work together to find the treasure that could change both their fates, or will they discover that the greatest treasure was there all along?

Jenn’s Review:

Katherine Hastings is back with a third installment of the Daggers of Desire series, rounding the series out with the story of Vivian and Simon.

Simon inherited the pirate vessel, Dark Shark, from his good friend and longtime partner, Viktor, when Viktor retired. While in port, waiting for the crew’s next adventure, a stubborn, determined woman demands to see the captain – only she’s quite distressed to discover Simon now carries the title.

Vivian’s found herself in a bad situation, the worst she’s ever faced. And when the tall, imposing Simon insists that Viktor has retired, Viv is at a loss. Her long-time friend and occasional lover, Viktor, is the only one she trusts to get her through her dilemma – a stolen half of a pirate treasure map.

Simon keeps his word and delivers Viv to Viktor’s doorstep, and true to the new Captain’s word, Viktor confirms his retirement and helps the pair plan their perilous journey to find Captain Avery’s lost pirate treasure.

Nothing in their journey is straight forward, and the pair repeatedly make their predicaments worse through their stubbornness. A common background is the only thing that eases the tension between them to quiet the constant sniping at each other.

This is a fun swashbuckling romance, with a quick pace and quick wit sprinkled throughout. While it is the third book in the series, it can easily be read on its own.
