About the Book:

Break the Line by Allison Mullinax

Contemporary Romance   Fiery Seas Everlasting

February 13, 2018

As a pro-fisherman, Benson Howell’s days are spent on murky lake water, reeling in largemouth bass and winning first place trophies. At twenty-nine, life is easy and carefree. His only job is to stay in the top rankings during the fishing circuit, and keep the sponsors happy. That is, until he meets hot tempered, fiery haired Danni-Rose in small-town Alabama. He has never backed down from anything too big to reel in.

Danni-Rose has spent the past six years of her life burying her past. When Benson Howell literally plows his boat right into her life, armed with simmering anger, she fights the current pulling her closer to him. With a past she can’t let go of, and the sexy fisherman breaking down all her walls, Danni-Rose does everything she can to break the line connecting her to Benson.

Will Danni-Rose be able to let go of the past?  Can Benson change her mind about him? Or will they both miss the catch of a lifetime?

Jenn’s Review:

Head’s up, Romance fans! This is a quick read, but you might want a box of tissues to get through it.

Allison Mullinax’s debut romance novel Break the Line rocks. While this is a novella, and not quite long enough to qualify as a full novel (the paperback comes in at about 150 pages), it’s a brisk read that will keep you clinging to the pages (or your tablet) to keep turning pages. Her pacing and attention to detail could use a little polish, but the plot itself is well-turned.

The story of Benson and Danni-Rose is full of emotional tension (and a little sexual tension!), and the conflicts between them are easy to spot (but not easy to overcome).

Without revealing spoilers, I’m going to give readers this heads up: I found myself sobbing (not just weepy, trickly tears, but full on gasping-for-air bawling my eyes out) near the end of the book. I won’t say that everyone will have this reaction – the heroine’s emotional conflict, the reason for her inner conflict over falling for Benson, is a situation I have personally seen – a life cut short in the blink of an eye due to someone’s careless “fun”.

Ms. Mullinax hits hard and hits home with Break the Line. If you’re looking for a quick read that grabs you by the heart and won’t let go until you hit the last line, check out Break the Line.

**Note: I believe Allison has another romance due to be released later this year. I’m looking forward to it with eager anticipation. She’s definitely on my “New Writers to Watch” list.

Excerpt (with permission from the publisher)

Excerpt 2 from Chapter 2 of BREAK THE LINE by Allison Mullinax

As expected, half the town is jam-packed into the mid-size barn turned restaurant. Christmas lights are strung across the large wooden beams along the ceiling, and the entire restaurant is a sea of picnic tables smashed together. The Whiskey Bayou Boys are perched on an old handmade stage toward the back of the restaurant. The fiddles, banjo, and guitars have everyone tapping their feet. Upstairs in the “hay loft” are the pool tables and dart boards. Buckets of crawfish, corn, and smoked sausage are plopped down in the center of each table. If you want to order anything else, then you might as well find another establishment.

“Pass me the hot sauce, baby.” My dad stretches his hand across the table, and I give it over. I pinch the crawfish head between my fingers, and my mouth waters when it snaps off. It’s been too long since I’ve enjoyed a night out.

“I don’t wanna hear you mutter a single complaint tonight about heart burn.” My mom gives my dad a stern look as he douses the entire crawfish in hot sauce. He winks at her and tosses it into his mouth, making a sound of pleasure while he chews.

“You sure look pretty tonight, darlin’,” my Aunt Becky shouts across the table moments before the band fires to life on the other side of the room. I smile and give her an appreciative nod.

“It’s the blue, it always makes her eyes shine.” My mama smiles at me, and pats my hand beside her.

“She gets it from her mama.” Daddy gives Mama his best smirk.

“I still don’t want to hear any complaints from you tonight. No use in trying to butter me up now. And you best hope we have a bottle of antacid at home, because the drug store is already closed for the night.” Mama swats at his hand. But Daddy ignores her, reaching around and placing his arm across her shoulders.

“All right, all right.” He hands the hot sauce back across the table, and I can’t help but laugh at their banter.

The song comes to an end and the singer places his lips to the microphone. “Now if my eyes aren’t deceiving me, I believe I see Miss Danni-Rose here tonight.” The patrons of the restaurant begin cheering and clapping and I smile behind a pull of my beer bottle.

“No way. Not tonight, Rickey!” I holler out across the barn, knowing I’ll more than likely give in. I’m two beers down, and the easy-going nature of the town is washing over me like a warm bath, replacing the anger I felt earlier in the day.

“Awww. Come on now, Danni, you don’t want to disappoint the fine citizens of this town. What do you say, folks? You feel like hearing Danni-Rose sing to us tonight?” Again, the barn comes to life with applause. I stand to my feet and the noise level raises another decibel.

“That’s my baby,” my dad yells to the table next to us as I scoot my way past them.

“One song,” I say, holding up my finger to Rickey, approaching the stage. He reaches his hands down and pulls me up with a grin stretching across his entire face.

He steps away from the microphone and holds his hands out in front of him for me to take his place. I wave over to the other band members, and they return with a smile. I curl my fingers around the microphone, feeling the cool metal against the palm of my hand. It’s been too long, but something in the air tonight has me feeling free, more than I’ve allowed myself to feel for quite some time.

I scan the faces of the room, and it’s then that I see him. That fisherman is tucked away in a corner booth, and his brown eyes are boring holes into mine. I feel the smile melt off my face, and I’m instantly set on fire with anger. I watch when he pulls a tumbler of dark liquid and ice to his lips, and I swear I see him smiling behind it.

Evermore (Mer-Tales Book 4) – Review

About the book:

Mother knows best.

The underwater world of Natatoria is enjoying a long awaited period of peace — and with it, the merpeople’s very first chance to visit human civilization. Ash and Fin’s wedding marks the perfect opportunity for the mers to celebrate their newfound freedom. But when they return home to Tahoe to prepare, Ash’s absence from the human world has raised more than a few questions about where she’s been. When blaming fingers point to Ash and Fin as the culprits who burned down Fin’s home, even his mind-jacking mojo hasn’t stopped the authorities from issuing the happy couple an early wedding gift—a matching pair of arrest warrants.

Instead of bringing their families together, Ash and Fin’s upcoming wedding drives a wedge between the very cultures they’re trying to bridge. And when their reality takes an unexpected twist, Ash realizes her dual existence comes with a hefty price. Neither her human nor her mer family understand the sacrifices they’re asking of her, and as much as she wants to please both her mer and human mothers, she knows she’s one misstep away from breaking two maternal hearts.

But with humans becoming aware of the mer, Ash and Fin must scramble to save their families, their societies . . . and their love. The only thing they know for sure is that when it comes to Natatorians, old habits die hard.

And a royal should never get too comfortable.

Sam’s Review:

Hello, all of my fellow readers, and the writers who watch my reviews. Today we finish up the Mer Tales series by Brenda Pandos with the book Evermore, starring all of your favorite characters from the series, of course, as well as some new ones. In case you’re new, my name is Sam, and this is Sam’s Teen Reads Corner! Let’s get started.

Fin and Ash are ready to tie the knot. All they need to do is get Ash’s, erm, “surrogate” father’s permission. I know what you’re thinking. “Why are you so nervous? It’s got to be great having two families!” You wish. Ash has to please both of her moms, deal with her snarky sister, keep Fin from mer-mojoing her family and friends, and stay away from a stalker. Oh, can’t forget that she has a merling on the way! Plot twist!

Anyways, Tatchi and her adopted daughter, Nicole, try their best to help Ash with the wedding, but the merling makes things a tad bit difficult. Again, I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first two, for some odd reason, but in my opinion, it was a tiny bit better than Everlost, so it get four point five stars. I think that Ash kind of makes it better, and there’s so many new characters, so that might have something to do with the sudden four and a half star rating. There’s too much going on for me!

If you want to get more review like this, and become one of my fellow readers/writer (it depends on which one you are. Heck, you guys could be both if you want!), all you have to do is subscribe, enable notifications, and like the video. Oh, and if you guys have a book that you think that I’d enjoy, please, don’t hesitate to suggest said book. Stay bold, my readers and writers!

Sam’s Review:

So, we meet again! Good, it means that you are still watching my reviews. That is very encouraging, I mean it. And now, time for the book of the week: Everblue (Mer Tales Book 1) by Brenda Pandos!

Two friends, Ashlynn (Ash) and Tatiana (Tatch, twin sister of Fin), have lived separate lives, with Tatch being homeschooled to protect her family secret (they’re mer-folk!), and Ash being regular schooled. And they both have a plan to go to the same college. Only, they are in for a big surprise. When Tatch and Fin, Ash’s crush, get called away to the mer-world, Fin finds it hard to stay away from Ash, but if he goes to her, he risks the exposure of his world. And with threats of promises, the mer equivalent to marriage, in the air for Tatch and Fin, and senior year drama for Ash, plans may just fall apart, and Fin’s and Ash’s futures will change with just a single kiss.

Everblue is a captivating story, and it will leave you wanting more. Luckily, Evergreen is the next book, so you might want to keep an eye out for the review. Please subscribe, like and enable notifications, and I’ll be back! See you next week!

Sam’s Review:

Hello everyone, my name’s Sam, and welcome to the review for Mertales book 2: Evergreen by Brenda Pandos.

Ash is still getting used to being promised. Fin is on his way to Florida for his safety, which is killing Ash. Not only is she extremely lovesick, mer-folk exist, which is something she’s never really believed in, Fin’s cousin, Colin, is attempting to promise himself to Ash in order to make her spill the beans about where Fin is, so she’s in danger, her bestie has been forced promised to the prince of Natoria, and she still has to balance out her senior year of highschool. Not fun. Not fun at all. Oh, and one more thing. Colin has the hair brained idea that Ash is the runaway princess of Natoria, Galadriel. And just because she has a royal birthmark! C’mon folks.

While Ash is having mer-stalker issues, Fin is dealing with a royal pain, literally. Princess Galadriel is at the safe-house, and is driving Fin bonkers. Even worse, she looks exactly like Ash; the only difference is what comes out of her mouth. And Fin is Galadriel’s escort. He’ll need to take a risk and return home to Ash though if he wants to keep her safe from his uncle, Alaster, and his no-good cousin Colin. And he needs to bring Galadriel. Once they are brought together, a secret is revealed that will change the way Ash will lead her life, and her plans fall apart even more.

I loved this book, loved the book after it (don’t worry, it’s coming, guys. Hang in there!), and, well, I just love the series altogether. Leave a suggestion as to a book that you think that I would like to read and review for you, subscribe, like and enable those notifications! I’ll be back with the third book, later! And now, for my unofficial goodbye. In the words of Waysa, from the Serafina series, stay bold! Bye guys!

Sam’s Review:

Hello to all of my viewers, and welcome back to Sam’s Teen Reads Corner, and we shall be continuing the Mer Tales series by Brenda Pandos with Everlost. Instead of having Ash as the star, Tatchi’s story is told.

Tatchi has been forced promised to the jerk prince Azor. Even though her promising tattoo and royal birthmark that was supposed to come with the promise haven’t made an appearance, she’s fallen head over tail for the prince. However, the rebel that tried to take her and got a chunk taken out of his arm is now her bodyguard.

The longer she stays at the palace, the more secrets she finds, and none of them are good, and almost all of them are against her. Azor’s father, the king is dying and tries to force promise Tatchi (again!) to himself to free her, her promise is a fake, and Azor wants her to pull off a con.

While I do enjoy the series, this wasn’t quite as enjoyable as the other two, which, and this is just my opinion, is kind of a bummer. So, yeah, for ratings, it gets four of five stars. Shocker! Alright, readers. Please remember to subscribe, like, enable notifications, and if you have one, suggest a book that you’d think that I would enjoy, and I will attempt to do a review. Bound by Prophecy – Review

About the book:

Aern’s only job is to protect the chosen. The trouble is, she’s the key to a prophecy and everyone wants her. Hiding a girl in the center of a secret war is tricky business, but when her sister shows up to take Aern hostage, all bets are off.

A slim brunette in borrowed jeans should be the least of his problems, but there’s something about Emily he just can’t put to rights. And it’s not her penchant for using hand tools as weapons or the fact that she seems immune to his sway.

Everything about her screams run. But when he discovers she’s working toward her own prophecy, he’s got no choice but to keep her safe. It might have been easy, if she didn’t think she was the chosen’s protector. When the opposition descends, their only hope is to stick together, but the truth unravels, and together might prove the biggest complication of them all.

Sam’s review:

Greetings, everyone! The bookish topic of today for this channel is Bound by Prophecy by Melissa Wright. One of three protagonists, Aern, brother of the antagonist, Morgan, hands the “chosen” too the Division, a choice that he believes will keep her safe from Morgan’s hands. Aern is caught by his evil brother, Morgan. Emily, the chosen’s sister, rescues him, only to hold him captive as she searches for Brianna, her sister. When they make it to the Division, he finds out that his chosen is a decoy, as well as a prophet. This is a quick paced adventure taking place on modern day Earth, but might as well be an alternate universe, plus it is captivating from the first paragraph to the last words. There is indeed a sequel to this, and I expect it to be done in the VERY near future, so keep an eye out for it. And I’ll be back. Sam out!

Excerpt (with permission of author and publisher):

Excerpt from Chapter Sixteen

Nola shuddered as she took the step that carried her from the road onto the bridge. The metal beneath her clanged with every step. The noise of the guards’ heavy boots shook the air and rattled her lungs like a vicious tolling bell, counting down the steps she had to take before she reached the middle of the bridge.

A line of people approached from the other side, holding torches and lights high in the air. They didn’t have any weapons Nola could see, but if they were wolves or Vampers, they wouldn’t need guns to kill the guards, or Nola.

Finally, Captain Ridgeway held up a hand, and the guards stopped as one.

The silence rang louder in Nola’s ears than the clanging of the bridge had.

The group from the city stopped fifty feet away. There were nearly twenty of them in a tight pack, all tense, ready to fight or run.

She hoped they would choose to run.

“We were told we could speak to Nola Kent,” the man at the front of the pack called from across the gap.

The man was tall with sinewy muscles. His torn clothes hung loosely on his frame. Even in the chill night air, the man wore short sleeves and seemed unbothered by the cold. In the dim light, Nola could barely make out the reddish hue of the man’s eyes.

A werewolf.

Jenn’s Review:

Allison Mullinax hits another home run with When it all Goes Still, her latest release from Fiery Seas Publishing. Both witty and intense, Still is told in an entirely different style than her first release, Break the Line.

Our hero for this story, Traveler, is mysterious and edgy; our heroine, Johanna, is a force to be reckoned with, despite her recent heartaches. Regardless of their instant attraction, their relationship is against all the rules, and they try – oh how they try – to stay away from each other. (How far away? A few hundred years, give or take…)

This book is written in first person POV, present tense. I know that isn’t often a first choice for readers, but I believe that it was the right choice for this particular novel. The plot is tense and twisty with surprises (something I think we can assume will become a hallmark for Ms. Mullinax), and it pulls readers in to keep turning the pages.

In short, When it all Goes Still, is another winner from Allison Mullinax. Intense, well-rounded characters move quickly through a riveting plot. This is a heart-breaking and sweet story in the time-travel romance department.
