Jenn’s Review:

Allison Mullinax hits another home run with When it all Goes Still, her latest release from Fiery Seas Publishing. Both witty and intense, Still is told in an entirely different style than her first release, Break the Line.

Our hero for this story, Traveler, is mysterious and edgy; our heroine, Johanna, is a force to be reckoned with, despite her recent heartaches. Regardless of their instant attraction, their relationship is against all the rules, and they try – oh how they try – to stay away from each other. (How far away? A few hundred years, give or take…)

This book is written in first person POV, present tense. I know that isn’t often a first choice for readers, but I believe that it was the right choice for this particular novel. The plot is tense and twisty with surprises (something I think we can assume will become a hallmark for Ms. Mullinax), and it pulls readers in to keep turning the pages.

In short, When it all Goes Still, is another winner from Allison Mullinax. Intense, well-rounded characters move quickly through a riveting plot. This is a heart-breaking and sweet story in the time-travel romance department.

Fury of Fire – Review

Jenn reviews Coreene Callahan's Fury of Fire, shapeshifter romance on Thrice Read Books review blog.

About the book:

Published February 7, 2012 by Montlake Romance

Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance

Book one in the Dragonfury series

A clandestine race of half-dragon, half-humans known as dragon shifters lives among us. Bastian, leader of the Nightfury dragon clan, is sworn to protect humankind at all costs. For him, honor and duty always come first. When the clan dictates he take a human mate to sire a son, he falters, aware that for a human to birth a dragon shifter she must die. Myst, the woman given into his care, is the most extraordinary he’s ever met, and though he can’t bear the thought of harming her he is bound by duty.

Myst loves her life in the human world, but Bastian has captured her heart in an instant of electric connection. But Bastian and his warriors are in the middle of a deadly battle with the Razorback dragon shifters, intent on killing every Nightfury clan member—and the humans they protect—the fate of their world and ours hangs in the balance.

An extraordinary blend of action, fantasy, and steamy romance, Fury of Fire brings to life a dangerous new world intertwined with the survival of humanity, all while exploring the meaning of honor and the nature of true love.

About the Author:

As the only girl on all-guys hockey teams from age six through her college years, Coreene Callahan knows a thing or two about tough guys and loves to write about them. Call it kismet. Call it payback after years of locker room talk and ice rink antics. But whatever you call it, the action better be heart stopping, the magic electric, and the story wicked good fun.

After graduating with honors in psychology and working as an interior designer, Callahan finally succumbed to her overactive imagination and returned to her first love: writing. And when she’s not writing, she is dreaming of magical worlds full of dragon-shifters, elite assassins, and romance that’s too hot to handle. Callahan currently lives in Canada with her family and her writing buddy, a fun-loving golden retriever.

Jenn’s Review:

Dragons, damsels and divisive clan wars, oh my! Coreene Callahan kicked this series off with a bang in Fury of Fire, Book 1 in the Dragonfury series.

This is one of those binge-buying Kindle books I picked up (embarrassingly, almost 3 years ago!), and dove into for a bit of a break from ARCs. I was most assuredly NOT disappointed.

In this shape-shifter-slash-urban-fantasy-romance, Bastian knows he needs to find a human female to impregnate. He’s not keen on the idea; it rubs his moral compass the wrong way, as the birth will inevitably result in his partner’s death.

Myst stumbles into the middle of a wild, action packed battle between Bastian’s clan and their bitter rivals, and in the end, she’s literally swept off to Bastian’s stronghold in the mountains above Seattle because she refuses to relinquish the baby she delivered just before the battle.

The plot is engaging, the characters well developed and the world-building is mostly believable. This book should be on your to-be-read list if you are a fan of shape-shifter romance.

Born of Fire by Sherrilyn Kenyon: Book Review

Book Review:  Book two of A League Novel, was just as good as book one if not better.  Kenyon has hit another great series with the League novel, and if you don’t fall in love with Syn or Shahara, you need to check your pulse.  Funny, witty, daring, and all out action and romance.  Another Kenyon that’s strong enough for a man, but made for a woman.  Easy four star rating.

Born of Ice by Sherrilyn Kenyon – Book Review

In the Ichidian Universe where The League is law, most live in fear. We fight back. Welcome to a world where corrupt assassination politics dominate everyone. It’s kill or be killed. Welcome back to the future…and meet hell’s new breed of heroes.

Devyn Kell spent his life in service to the League until he learned of the double dealing and backstabbing that was costing innocent people their lives. Refusing to play those politics, he became a Runner―someone who makes sure planets get the weapons, medicine and supplies they need to survive. May the gods have mercy on any who get in his way, because he definitely won’t.

Alix Garran is a woman on the run from a past she can’t escape. Signing on to work for Devyn as a System’s Engineer, she finds a cause she can fight for―and a man she can respect. But as Alix’s past catches up to her, and Devyn’s old enemies turn lethal, they have to fight together…or fall alone, in Born of Ice, the third bestselling League novel from Sherrilyn Kenyon. (From Amazon.com product listing.)

I found book 3 to the League Novel series excellent giving it four stars.  Kenyon surely did not disappoint once again.  For a Sci-Fi Romance novel, this book and series is great.  Yes I know it was made for a lady, but it has just the right amount of action and violence to satisfy a man.  If you have read books one and two, you do not under any circumstances want to miss book 3.

Truck Stop – Book Review

Teri Campbell is on the run, on a bus ride to nowhere. An unscheduled stop on the wind-blown plains of Wyoming leaves her at M&J’s Truck Stop… and in the arms of Mike Gallagher, the young trucker who appoints himself her protector, who understands her as no one else could. But will her new life and her new-found love be enough when events take an unexpected turn? …and can even Mike keep her safe from the past that threatens to reclaim her? (From Amazon.com description)

Ms. McCormack has established herself as a storyteller with this tender, bold telling of Teri’s foray into life as a survivor of abuse and her budding romance with Mike. She has tackled the topics of teen pregnancy and child abuse with masterful skill, strong, well-developed characters and an engaging plot. Definitely worth the read!

Run to Ground by Katie Ruggle – Book Review

About the story:

Jules has done something very, very wrong for all the right reasons. And now, she and her 3 siblings are on the run, trying to stay out of the clutches of her hateful step-mother.

As if things aren’t complicated enough, Jules has caught the attention of one hot, surly regular at the diner she works at. Being noticed by anyone is risky for Jules and her family, but this is so much worse because Theo, and the co-workers he comes into the diner with daily… Are cops.

Theo knows something’s off about the petite, jumpy new waitress at the diner. His fellow officers know something’s off about her, too. But the more he tries to stay away from her, the more Theo finds himself drawn to her. He has his own problems to deal with, as well as a new K9 partner that is as emotionally damaged as he is, but in the presence of Jules and her siblings, both seem to come back to life.

Review:

Ms. Ruggle has written a witty, touching and suspenseful romance that builds to a steamy climax with some shocking twists and turns in this third book in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series. Romantic suspense fans will definitely want to tune into this hot romance to find out what happens between Jules and Theo.

Into the Blue – Book Review

About the Book:

From the author of Fly with Me and the Capital Confessions Novels comes the newest in the sexy Wild Aces Romance series.

Eric Jansen—call sign Thor—loves nothing more than pushing his F-16 to the limit. Returning home to South Carolina after a tragic loss, he hopes to fix the mistake he made long ago, when he chose the Air Force over his fiancée.

Becca Madison isn’t quick to welcome Thor back. She can’t forget how he shattered her heart. But Thor won’t give up once he’s set his sights on what he wants—and he wants Becca.

Thor shows Becca that he’s no longer the impulsive boy he used to be, and Becca finds herself irresistibly drawn to him. But will Thor be able to walk away from his dream of flying the F-16 for their love or does his heart belong to the sky?

Jenn’s Review:

I’m a sucker for a second chance romance, especially since I married my high school sweetheart 12 years ago, after going in different directions for a number of years. In Into the Blue, Chantal Cleeton has woven an amazing love-lost-love-again story for Eric and Becca in the second book of her Wild Aces series.

Eric walked away from Becca and their engagement ten years ago, and now, as he struggles with PTSD after the loss of his squadron leader in an F-16 crash, he needs to figure out what direction his life is taking. F-16’s and the high-adrenaline lifestyle of a fighter pilot have been his life since he walked away from the only woman he’s ever loved. Perhaps it’s time to reconsider the trajectory of his career.

Becca has never quite gotten over the love of her life, even though Eric tore her heart out when he chose flying over her. Already scarred by life and loosing her parents at a young age, Becca wants to put down roots, enjoy her law career, and have a family of her own. For years, she’d thought that Eric would be at her side to share that life with her. Now, she can’t seem to quite get over the pain he left her with in their small hometown of Bradbury, SC.

When Eric takes leave to go home for the first time since leaving Becca behind, things between the pair heat up quickly. As much as Becca tries to tell herself that it’s only temporary, that her heart can’t get involved, she can’t seem to help falling for Eric all over again. Eric, on the other hand, knows he wants Becca in his life again, but can they find a compromise between her needs and desires, and his love of flying?

On Broken Wings – Book Review

About the Book:

The author of Into the Blue and Fly with Me returns with the third high-flying Wild Aces romance…

A year after losing her husband, Joker, the squadron commander of the Wild Aces, Dani Peterson gets an offer from his best friend, Alex “Easy” Rogers, to help fix up her house. Dani accepts, and their friendship grows—along with an undeniable attraction.

Racked by guilt for loving his best friend’s widow, Easy’s caught between what he wants and can’t have. Until one night everything changes, and the woman who’s always held his heart ends up in his arms. Yet as Easy leaves for his next deployment, he and Dani are torn between their feelings and their loyalty to Joker’s memory.

But when Dani discovers something that sends them both into a spin, the conflicted lovers must overcome the past to navigate a future together…

Jenn’s Review:

Chanel Cleeton strikes a chord once more with her third book in the Wild Aces series, On Broken Wings.

Dani has struggled along in the year since her husband, call sign “Joker” crashed into an Alaskan mountain side in his F-16, and the loss of their baby only a few months before. She’s alone, trying to redefine herself after years as an Air Force wife, unsure where life will leave her once her house sells and it’s time to move on. Alex, call sign “Easy”, has been a long-time close friend, was her husband’s best friend, and he’s always been there when Dani needed a strong shoulder to lean on.

Alex, however, has kept a deep, dark secret for all the years he’s known Dani. His heart has been in her hands for years, head over heels in love with his friend’s devoted wife, never saying a word to anyone about it. With Joker gone, however, guilt consumes him over the need he feels for Dani, and fear has edged in with it. Dani might be gone forever when he returns from his latest deployment to Afghanistan.

Can these two find each other, beyond friendship and their shared grief? Can Dani find the realization of her dreams she’s long thought dead and gone?

Ms. Cleeton weaves an emotionally gripping story of friends pulling apart and coming back together, stronger than before. Sexy and fast paced, reading this book was everything I look for in a romance novel.

Jake – Book Review

About the book:

Orginally published in 2014 under the title Redeemed by a Rebel.

Jake Anderson killed a man defending his fiancée from a brutal attack, but lost her and his freedom in the process. Now he’s on the run, tormented by the need for vengeance.

Becky Finnegan will do anything to escape her drunken father’s fists, including slave away at their mine. Her only hope is to strike gold and make a new life for herself somewhere far, far away from Deadwood. But then Jake arrives and does the unthinkable…forces her to feel, to hope…and to love.

Jake would give his life to protect Becky, but all he can offer her is a broken heart, a criminal’s life, and a past haunted by failure. How can he save her when he’s already lost himself? Will he destroy everything, or can the beautiful rebel redeem Jake’s lost soul?

Jenn’s Review:

In Cynthia Woolf’s first book in her Destiny in Deadwood series, readers follow the story of Jake and Becky during Colorado’s gold rush.

Jake Anderson loves his fiancee, even though her father frowns on their relationship and resents Jake’s humble occupation as a farmer. But when Jake comes to call on her, and finds her former beau standing over her with a gun, his life begins to unravel. He manages to exact a kind of vengeance on her murderer, but a crooked witness makes his getaway, leaving Jake in a bad situation, with warrants for his arrest for crimes he didn’t commit.

Along with his two brothers and his oldest brother’s two children, Jake makes his getaway to Deadwood, Colorado – a lawless place outside the jurisdiction of any arm of the law.

Becky struggles to maintain the mining claim she and her abusive, drunken father own, but when Jake stumbles into her life, her world is turned upside down. Both Becky and Jake try to avoid their growing feelings for each other, and when Becky’s father announces that he’s sold her to a seedy land owner, the couple hatch a desperate plan to keep Becky out of the hands of yet another abusive relationship.

Can the pair overcome their individual stubbornness and shady pasts to make a real future for themselves where the Law has no say, and vengeance rules supreme?

Ms. Woolf spins a beautiful, if rough (because living out of tents as prospectors isn’t luxurious) tale of a man redeemed and a woman stronger than she seems. Sweet, raw and funny, all at the same time.
