About the Book:

Two Hearts, One Stone by Leslie Scott

Contemporary Romance

The Wild Rose Press – September 26, 2018

Horse trainer Stone Dempsey’s life is all about the ride—with horses and women. He uses his equine talents to impress the country club set and earn money for Smoky Mountain Reining Horses. When his drug-addicted sister deposits her sick baby on his doorstep, he’s suddenly saddled with real responsibility.

Dr. Emmersyn Cole’s goal of starting a practice in her favorite place on earth is finally coming to fruition and she is not going to be sidetracked. Everything is going great until Stone swaggers into her life, half-dressed with a smile that could melt her insides. She’s determined to keep her distance…until he rushes into her grandfather’s home, clutching a feverish baby, terrified and vulnerable, and her heart’s hard shell begins to crack.

In only a few short weeks, Stone’s wayward heart suddenly relies on two women—one who needs him—and one that he might not be able to live without.

Excerpt (by permission of the author & publisher)

He was spinning and dizzy because of Emmy. He hadn’t expected her to throw him for a loop like she had, have him waiting on her after work, cleaning up his cabin, and all the other silly things he’d done in the past few weeks.

Yet there he was, with a shoulder against the stall door, watching the sparkles of faded sunlight dance in her reddish, curling hair.

He was a goner.

“I feel naked when you look at me like that.” Her fingers trembled as she tucked a lock behind her ear.

“That’s not the way I look at you when you’re naked.”

Jenn’s Review:

Sexy cowboy Cassanova meets sweet pediatrician in Leslie Scott’s newest cowboy romance, Two Hearts One Stone.

Stone Dempsey is sexy, smooth, a fantastic horse trainer… And a shameless playboy who has more notches in his bedpost than any man has a right to. When his boss’s granddaughter, Emmersyn, moves back to town to start her pediatric practice, Stone is immediately attracted. Except she has a front row seat to a spectacular exit from his latest conquest, and his reputation precedes him.

Emmersyn doesn’t have time for a relationship. At least, that’s what she keeps telling herself. Stone makes it easy to resist, at first. But when he shows up at her grandfather’s house with a sick baby, she’s caught in a tornado of emotion. When she learns the baby isn’t his daughter, and a bit more of Stone’s story comes to light, she has an increasingly difficult time convincing herself to stay away.

Ms. Scott weaves steamy sexual chemistry with deep characters against a southern rural backdrop filled with tempting debutantes and high-value horses.

This is the kind of romance I love to read, and it kept me turning the pages to find out what happens next.

For fans of adult contemporary romance and sexy cowboy stories. Mature language and scenes, with a sweet story and subplot.

June 12, 2018

Dr. Lexie Draden didn’t want to leave her successful career as a surgeon in Chicago, but she didn’t have a choice. Her family needed to heal, and as long as she was around, it wasn’t going to happen. While adapting to her new community, she meets Zak Tifour, a man as intriguing as he is handsome.

Most of the small-town residents view Zak as a man who likes his privacy, but to a select few, something doesn’t seem right. Long-time resident Cicily McQuay believes she has the key to the man’s odd behavior – a link to terrorism. After all, he just isn’t the type of man who belongs in her community. But to belong, you need to be welcomed; something Cicily has never extended to Zak.

Zak knows plenty of terrorists and has even lived amongst them, but not like Cicily suspects. Escaping from a lifetime of bloodshed and regrets, he attempts to distant himself from the quirky townsfolk; people unable to comprehend boundaries. It appears to be working until he encounters the town’s new attractive doctor. Even though his secrets run deep, she ends up trusting him with her heart. But trust is fragile, and when Zak gets drawn back to his old life, Lexie must decide whether he’s a dangerous man or a broken hero.

Jenn’s Review:

Head’s up, Romance fans! This is a quick read, but you might want a box of tissues to get through it.

Allison Mullinax’s debut romance novel Break the Line rocks. While this is a novella, and not quite long enough to qualify as a full novel (the paperback comes in at about 150 pages), it’s a brisk read that will keep you clinging to the pages (or your tablet) to keep turning pages. Her pacing and attention to detail could use a little polish, but the plot itself is well-turned.

The story of Benson and Danni-Rose is full of emotional tension (and a little sexual tension!), and the conflicts between them are easy to spot (but not easy to overcome).

Without revealing spoilers, I’m going to give readers this heads up: I found myself sobbing (not just weepy, trickly tears, but full on gasping-for-air bawling my eyes out) near the end of the book. I won’t say that everyone will have this reaction – the heroine’s emotional conflict, the reason for her inner conflict over falling for Benson, is a situation I have personally seen – a life cut short in the blink of an eye due to someone’s careless “fun”.

Ms. Mullinax hits hard and hits home with Break the Line. If you’re looking for a quick read that grabs you by the heart and won’t let go until you hit the last line, check out Break the Line.

**Note: I believe Allison has another romance due to be released later this year. I’m looking forward to it with eager anticipation. She’s definitely on my “New Writers to Watch” list.

Excerpt (with permission from the publisher)

Excerpt 2 from Chapter 2 of BREAK THE LINE by Allison Mullinax

As expected, half the town is jam-packed into the mid-size barn turned restaurant. Christmas lights are strung across the large wooden beams along the ceiling, and the entire restaurant is a sea of picnic tables smashed together. The Whiskey Bayou Boys are perched on an old handmade stage toward the back of the restaurant. The fiddles, banjo, and guitars have everyone tapping their feet. Upstairs in the “hay loft” are the pool tables and dart boards. Buckets of crawfish, corn, and smoked sausage are plopped down in the center of each table. If you want to order anything else, then you might as well find another establishment.

“Pass me the hot sauce, baby.” My dad stretches his hand across the table, and I give it over. I pinch the crawfish head between my fingers, and my mouth waters when it snaps off. It’s been too long since I’ve enjoyed a night out.

“I don’t wanna hear you mutter a single complaint tonight about heart burn.” My mom gives my dad a stern look as he douses the entire crawfish in hot sauce. He winks at her and tosses it into his mouth, making a sound of pleasure while he chews.

“You sure look pretty tonight, darlin’,” my Aunt Becky shouts across the table moments before the band fires to life on the other side of the room. I smile and give her an appreciative nod.

“It’s the blue, it always makes her eyes shine.” My mama smiles at me, and pats my hand beside her.

“She gets it from her mama.” Daddy gives Mama his best smirk.

“I still don’t want to hear any complaints from you tonight. No use in trying to butter me up now. And you best hope we have a bottle of antacid at home, because the drug store is already closed for the night.” Mama swats at his hand. But Daddy ignores her, reaching around and placing his arm across her shoulders.

“All right, all right.” He hands the hot sauce back across the table, and I can’t help but laugh at their banter.

The song comes to an end and the singer places his lips to the microphone. “Now if my eyes aren’t deceiving me, I believe I see Miss Danni-Rose here tonight.” The patrons of the restaurant begin cheering and clapping and I smile behind a pull of my beer bottle.

“No way. Not tonight, Rickey!” I holler out across the barn, knowing I’ll more than likely give in. I’m two beers down, and the easy-going nature of the town is washing over me like a warm bath, replacing the anger I felt earlier in the day.

“Awww. Come on now, Danni, you don’t want to disappoint the fine citizens of this town. What do you say, folks? You feel like hearing Danni-Rose sing to us tonight?” Again, the barn comes to life with applause. I stand to my feet and the noise level raises another decibel.

“That’s my baby,” my dad yells to the table next to us as I scoot my way past them.

“One song,” I say, holding up my finger to Rickey, approaching the stage. He reaches his hands down and pulls me up with a grin stretching across his entire face.

He steps away from the microphone and holds his hands out in front of him for me to take his place. I wave over to the other band members, and they return with a smile. I curl my fingers around the microphone, feeling the cool metal against the palm of my hand. It’s been too long, but something in the air tonight has me feeling free, more than I’ve allowed myself to feel for quite some time.

I scan the faces of the room, and it’s then that I see him. That fisherman is tucked away in a corner booth, and his brown eyes are boring holes into mine. I feel the smile melt off my face, and I’m instantly set on fire with anger. I watch when he pulls a tumbler of dark liquid and ice to his lips, and I swear I see him smiling behind it.

Secrets of Bennett Hall – Review

About the book:

SECRETS OF BENNETT HALL, by Jordan Elizabeth

Series: Return to Amston Book Two

Genre: steampunk, adventure

Publisher: Curiosity Quills Press

Date of Release: January 30, 2018

Cover Artist: Eugene Teplitsky

Find Online: Amazon US | Amazon UK | Goodreads

Description:

Darkness once twisted Adelaide Dinsmore’s mind, but she thought she had grown out of that. Her job as a teacher in Hedlund proved that – until she discovers one of her students dead and the town turns against her. As her mind starts to crumble, she is offered a new job, this time as a governess for Gentleman Bennett’s granddaughter back east.

Bennett Hall is a sprawling manor of winding tunnels and manicured lawns, and the fence is really just for show. The little girl, Theodora, is a delight, albeit quiet, and the Bennetts are kind enough, especially the dashing young Joseph. So what if one of the servants sends chills down her spine every time he looks at her? Surely that, and the noises in the night, are figments of her imagination. She won’t allow the past in Hedlund to tarnish her future at Bennett Hall.

Then, Theodora begins to speak of a Villain who haunts secret passages in the manor, and Adelaide stumbles upon a sealed off wing where ghosts whisper from the shadows. Twisted inventions fill the basement and the villagers are wary of the Bennett family.

The longer she stays at Bennett Hall, the less likely her chance for escape, but she cannot leave Theodora or Joseph. The darkness in her mind might be the only thing to save them.

Jenn’s Review:

I just finished reading this book… And frankly, I’m a bit breathless.

I’m arguing with myself about how best to write a review for this new release, because each option I present, carries with it the chance for a spoiler, so I will keep this brief.

Bennett Hall is the second book in the Return to Amston series, though the only connection between the two seems to be a vaguely mentioned side character (from another series, I’m gathering), and a common “big city” and wider world. The plots appear to be, in no other way that I can find, otherwise unrelated.

I enjoyed Bennett Hall far more than Runners and Riders. The mystery was deep and complex, and the solution was… erm… unexpected. The budding romance between Adelaide and Joseph adds a romantic element, and sweet little Theodora is every nanny’s dream.

Jordan’s character and plot development has grown by leaps and bounds between this book and Runners, and Sam (hostess of Sam’s Teen Reads Corner) will be reading this sometime in the near future.

If you haven’t read Runners yet, while I recommend the book on its own merit of an engaging story line and relate-able characters, reading these books in their published order isn’t strictly necessary.

In summary, I absolutely loved Bennett Hall, and look forward to further mystery-adventure-romances from Jordan Elizabeth.

Teri Campbell is on the run, on a bus ride to nowhere. An unscheduled stop on the wind-blown plains of Wyoming leaves her at M&J’s Truck Stop… and in the arms of Mike Gallagher, the young trucker who appoints himself her protector, who understands her as no one else could. Run to Ground by Katie Ruggle – Book Review

About the story:

Jules has done something very, very wrong for all the right reasons. And now, she and her 3 siblings are on the run, trying to stay out of the clutches of her hateful step-mother.

As if things aren’t complicated enough, Jules has caught the attention of one hot, surly regular at the diner she works at. Being noticed by anyone is risky for Jules and her family, but this is so much worse because Theo, and the co-workers he comes into the diner with daily… Are cops.

Theo knows something’s off about the petite, jumpy new waitress at the diner. His fellow officers know something’s off about her, too. But the more he tries to stay away from her, the more Theo finds himself drawn to her. He has his own problems to deal with, as well as a new K9 partner that is as emotionally damaged as he is, but in the presence of Jules and her siblings, both seem to come back to life.

Review:

Ms. Ruggle has written a witty, touching and suspenseful romance that builds to a steamy climax with some shocking twists and turns in this third book in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series. Romantic suspense fans will definitely want to tune into this hot romance to find out what happens between Jules and Theo.

Into the Blue – Book Review

About the Book:

From the author of Fly with Me and the Capital Confessions Novels comes the newest in the sexy Wild Aces Romance series.

Eric Jansen—call sign Thor—loves nothing more than pushing his F-16 to the limit. Returning home to South Carolina after a tragic loss, he hopes to fix the mistake he made long ago, when he chose the Air Force over his fiancée.

Becca Madison isn’t quick to welcome Thor back. She can’t forget how he shattered her heart. But Thor won’t give up once he’s set his sights on what he wants—and he wants Becca.

Thor shows Becca that he’s no longer the impulsive boy he used to be, and Becca finds herself irresistibly drawn to him. But will Thor be able to walk away from his dream of flying the F-16 for their love or does his heart belong to the sky?

Jenn’s Review:

I’m a sucker for a second chance romance, especially since I married my high school sweetheart 12 years ago, after going in different directions for a number of years. In Into the Blue, Chantal Cleeton has woven an amazing love-lost-love-again story for Eric and Becca in the second book of her Wild Aces series.

Eric walked away from Becca and their engagement ten years ago, and now, as he struggles with PTSD after the loss of his squadron leader in an F-16 crash, he needs to figure out what direction his life is taking. F-16’s and the high-adrenaline lifestyle of a fighter pilot have been his life since he walked away from the only woman he’s ever loved. Perhaps it’s time to reconsider the trajectory of his career.

Becca has never quite gotten over the love of her life, even though Eric tore her heart out when he chose flying over her. Already scarred by life and loosing her parents at a young age, Becca wants to put down roots, enjoy her law career, and have a family of her own. For years, she’d thought that Eric would be at her side to share that life with her. Now, she can’t seem to quite get over the pain he left her with in their small hometown of Bradbury, SC.

When Eric takes leave to go home for the first time since leaving Becca behind, things between the pair heat up quickly. As much as Becca tries to tell herself that it’s only temporary, that her heart can’t get involved, she can’t seem to help falling for Eric all over again. Eric, on the other hand, knows he wants Becca in his life again, but can they find a compromise between her needs and desires, and his love of flying?

Return to Gone Away – Book Review

About the Book:

Return to Gone-Away is a children’s book written by Elizabeth Enright, which is the sequel to the book Gone-Away Lake and discusses how the Blake family buys a house in Gone-Away. The book was first published in 1961.Plot introductionWhen Portia learns of her parents buying Villa Caprice, a tumbledown Victorian house close to Gone-Away Lake, she is excited. She, her brother Foster and her cousin Julian enjoy learning about the “new” old house, with the help of elderly neighbors Mr. Payton and Mrs. Cheever.

Sam’s Review:

Portia and Julian are back in Return to Gone-Away Lake when the Villa Caprice is bought for a full time home to live in. Join Uncle Pin and Aunt Minnehaha as they find old treasures and the old watering hole when they need to swim during the hottest of summers. This book is by Elizabeth Enright and published by Odyssey Classics Harcourt, Inc.

Portia is overjoyed to hear that her parents have bought the Villa Caprice, but it’s just so much work to fix! I mean, think about it. It needs new plumbing, new shutters, even heating elements. Family and friends fix up the old house to make it the best house ever, if it means getting scared by Baron Bloodshed, the “watchdog” Mrs. Brace-Gideon sets out to guard her home.

Follow along as they find rare items, spend the night in an old house, and make new friends. Foster and Davey find a dumb-waiter and get stuck in it! And better yet, they uncover the secret that Villa Caprice has held for years…

When Julian and a friend go to spend the night in an old house during a storm, they are stuck in the highest room in the house, and when a goat comes and knocks the stairs down, then they are really stuck. But before that, summer was never hotter. 100॰ in the morning, and getting hotter throughout the day! Pindar remembers that there was a watering hole where the children of Gone-Away Lake used to swim. But he doubts it’s even still there. So, he takes them up there, in the old fashioned bathing suits, of course, and finds it still around, crystal clear and ready for enjoyment. And with that, the characters have a blast in the water, cooling off.

Mrs. Brace-Gideon was said to have owned a safe where she kept her best and greatest treasures. Everyone has big hopes of finding it and opening the safe to find its greatest treasure. And when Portia finds it, everyone cannot wait to find what secrets it has held since Mrs. Brace-Gideon left. And when it is opened, the contents were…

Want to find out how our story ends? Read the book! This book is for ages 8 and up. Illustrated by Beth and Joe Krush. I’d give it four stars for excitement and enjoyment. 5 stars for the best descriptions. Illustrated.
